lads when i start my car cold its idle at 1200rpm. im thinking its the idle control valve but got this changed 12 months ago any ideas?

Doesn't sound like an issue on a really cold morning you may see up to 2500 rpm as the car tries to warm itself up ( required to so it can meet emissions regulations ) only if the revs don't drop off as the car reaches temp would i be worried there is an issue.

Yes, its called the auto choke in modern engines, older cars you had a manual lever to engage the carbs choke on start up and hence the higher revs.
