Out of curiosity did you have a rattle that sounded like a small chain rattle coming from under the car????

I only ask because I do, it sounds like somthing loose on the exhaust, its next on my check list.

Where abouts on the exhaust is this weight located, and is it really needed?? its the first I've heard about a balance weight on an exhaust on any car.

no noise was was coming from under car, just bounced off when driving, didn't know at first if it came from our car or if it came off the car that was driving beside me.took it to toyota garage and without looking the mechanic told me what it was,if i want to replace it i have to get a new exhaust system aswell  told me it was alright to drive so i think the new system will wait.don't know where on the exhaust it goes.

Hi There

I too was worried by a rattle from my car that sounded like a small chain rattling underneath - most noticeably when driving close past a building with the passenger window open. My Toyota dealer said it was the split pins moving in the end of the driveshaft !. I've had the noise since new, and 2 years and 31,000 miles later it is no worse, so I kind of think of it as the car chuckling to itself, as she bumbles along (its a D4D Diesel).

Mind you I'm less than happy at the phenominal rust on the engine block (acceptable for this vehicle sir............)

Cheers

Yep, those driveshaft split pins do make a tinking sound. You can stop it by removing your wheel trim/center cap and bending them to secure them a little better.

Problem sorted!!

Well turn me on my head!!!!! I would have been looking for ages and still would not have thought of SPLIT PINS !!!!

Thank you all on the behalf of my familly, they need not to endure hours of me turning the air blue, with phrases like :censor: CAR!, cant find that :censor: rattle! and I've had enough! this :censor: car can go :censor: its self back to the :censor: place it came from! shoulda bought a :censor: Nissan!.

Cheers all.

Dan.

The part you are talking about is an anti vibration damper and is fitted at the rear of the front pipe area, and it is usually the bracket that is welded to the pipe that rusts away. Mine fell off a year ago and apart from a slight resonance from the exhaust, will make no difference to the running
