Hi and hello to everyone on the forum. I am a new member on here and hope to share my knowledge of the Auris with every other owner. I have a question to ask though, my car engine won't turn over. It has been working perfectly up until a few days ago, but on Saturday, I turn the key and the engine tries to start and there is a clicking noise aswell. The car is in first gear, with clutch held down, the lights are working fine, inside and out, radio is working but the dashboard display dims quite a bit when the key is turned. Any help would be appreciated thank you.

Hello John - welcome to Toyota Owners Club.

Would be useful to know which engine your Auris has - petrol or diesel?

Hi Mike, thanks for the reply. Petrol engine and it's a 1.4 Luna.

Sorry Admin, I didn't see the message about not posting questions in this section. Can I move it or will you move it?

The clicking will be the starter solenoid, which delivers a high amperage current to the starter motor. But it should only click once on/once off when you turn the key. If it's clicking continuously, you have a different problem which might be just a duff Battery. They can fail at very short notice, especially when the first frosts arrive.

I'm assuming, though, that your starter motor isn't turning the engine at all, and that it isn't even groaning with the effort of trying to start? If you lift the bonnet and get somebody else to look while you try to start it (no touching, it's dangerous), does the engine appear to be trying to move?

Could be a dead starter, could be a loose earth strap to the engine, could even be dirty Battery terminals. Does this link help? Take note of the warnings about heavy-current wiring, though!

Final question: Do you always engage first gear before you turn the key? It isn't needed on my 1.6 petrol.
