Reliability of Auris generations?

Auris 2007-13 or 13 onwards?

My current Auris I have had the following issues - replace a water pump and leaks in both rear light clusters - both problems seem to be common to this car.

Two Auris 1.33's bought new:

2009 (owned Sept 2009 to Oct 2012): broken passenger side cup holder, replaced under warranty; one blown main beam bulb.

2012 (owned Oct 2012 to Aug 2016): failed tailgate strut - both replaced under warranty; one blown low beam bulb.

Nothing else went wrong with either Auris.

Auris 1.33 owned from Feb 2010 to present. Washer jets clogging can be a bit of nuisance and I also have an odd issue (there is a thread somewhere) of having to reset the ECU every 12 months or so to maintain performance. Very subtle when its not right, some may not even notice, but do the reset and the difference is apparent. As no one on the planet has seemingly encountered this problem I put the blame at my driving style and usage and the fact the ECU is adaptive, in other words a 'characteristic' (if an annoying one) and not a fault. Still on the original wiper rubbers all round :)

All in all the best car I have ever owned.

How do you reset the ecu? When you say it’s very subtle how did you know something was wrong? 2008 2.0 d4d here also maybe not related but curious as to whether it would improve mpg?

mine has a habit of blowing dip bulbs but £7 every 3 or 4 months isn’t a big outlay. Mechanically very sound and I doubt I’d get a car as reliable as mine has proved doing a lot of miles

The effect (for me) when its not right is very subtle, mostly noticeable at constant highish speed (50+) where you could sense a weird kind of hunting, as if someone was pressing the brake pedal with a feather... on... off...on...off.

The ECU in any car can be reset by disconnecting the Battery for 15 minutes or so. Best to do it when the engine is fully cold and then when you restart, let it idle for 3 or 4  minutes before taking it for a longish mixed driving run. That allows the ECU to learn the basic optimum settings for your engine, thereafter it continually monitors and tweaks fuelling and so on. Don't be surprised if the idle speed is all over the place for the first few seconds as it relearns. Just let it idle and then drive.

The D4D will be totally different to the 1.33 petrol but if you have doubts then it is an easy thing to try.

Snap. Mine had leaking rear light clusters, which does seem to be very common. Also the waterpump started to become quite noisy around 50k and I had it replaced.

Mine's now on 82k and the only other problem I've had was a failed ignition coil at about 70k. That does seem to be very rare as no one had any in stock and the Toyota dealer I ordered a replacement coil from could not remember ever having sold one before.
