A Couple of Issues

Hello everyone,

My first post on this forum; just acquired a 2005 (54) Yaris 1.0 as an additional run about. It has a couple of issues that I aim to fix in due course -

firstly the CV boot(s) are broken so I will need to look at replacing the boot or the whole joint (makes clicking sound on full lock)

alternator belt (I think) is a bit whiney. By that occasionally you get a weird ringing or whining noise every now and then. If anyone can confirm my suspicions that would be appreciated.

Also, after servicing it (plugs/oil/filters), when the car is warm in seems to be struggling to start. It does always start but it just takes long enough for it to be uncomfortable. However when it is a cold start, it is almost immediate. Seems to be doing this after I changed the plugs, if anyone has encountered this issue that would be helpful. Will be taking a look at the plugs tomorrow.

If anyone knows a good source of genuine parts online/through the forum, that would also be helpful

Apart from that, I really enjoy driving this little thing, the small engine is really punchy and smooth and the gear ratios are brilliant for a small car

Appreciate any advice and thanks for reading.

I had the whining/ringing noise on an Audi A4. The timing belt tensioner pulley bearing was disintegrating. Changed it just in time.. fell to bits when I removed it.

i have the alternator belt noise and i put a long screwdriver on all the parts and it is the tensioner pulley bearings that are rough when cold, goes away after 10 mins and is quiet. hoping to get the dealer to replace next month but i will have it replaced no matter what.

the yaris has a chain so dont worry about timing belts

On the CV boots, if it makes the clicking sound when turning, the joint it self is shoot, be better off replacing the joints them self's. About the belts, always a good idea to replace them, specially if you don't know when they were last replaced, same goes for the timing chain, better off replacing then it breaking the engine.

Although timing chains have longer service mileages, they shouldn't be ignored at all.

Thanks folks, looking at purchasing a set of driveshafts from a breaker...Toyota quoted £300/ea

Not overall fussed about the timing chain, usually make a rattle on start up when they are going

Purchased a Toyota oem v belt for £12, will be replacing it in the next couple of weeks. Hoping it solves it, it’s very intermittent and only really when the car is warm that it squeals for a little bit then goes away

Sometimes cv joints can be replaced.  Might be worth a call to a propshaft repair type place.

I had to change the CV boot on my Yaris a couple of months ago and I confirm that the CV joints are replacable. No need to change the whole axle if the axle itself is ok.

Also, i thought all of the cv joints were replacable, turn out some cars they are not? Always learning ahah

Thanks for information! Looking at my options, saw blueprint, skf and herth + buss jakoparts. Leaning to skf personally. Anyone have experience with any of these?
