5efe adjustable cam gears...

Paseo5647(from paseopimp.com) is trying to set up a group buy for 5efe cam gears. he's going to contact AEM,HKS, etc to see if theres a manufacturer out there to develope them for the 5efe. he told me to let u guys know that he's trying his best to get this up and running for both the tercels and the paseos, and the starlets.

here's what he sent me:

Hey, I think I want to try to get some kind of group buy for adjustable cam gears from AEM or one of those companies going. Even if it doesn't work, it's worth a try to do it. But since you stay in contact with the Tercel forum and all that, maybe you could inform them as well. I believe the adjustable cam gears would also work on Tercel's, so it could be a nice way to try to get a group buy going. That way there would be a lot more people to try to do this. Sound like an idea or anything. I'm contacting AEM, HKS, Skunk2, and a few other companies tomarrow to ask them about details. If you have AIM, hit me up at treflip5647. Or else just let me know what you think. Thanks.

as far as pricing goes..don't ask yet, cause we don't have the product created yet. this is just a heads up to everyone

the 5e is the same as the 4e they have a single cam gear and gears on the cams inside the head that each cam runs off, adjustable gear is useless as you cant adjust each cam seperatly.

the benefit of adjustable cam gears is it allows tuning of individual cams by advancing or retarding timing(so you can alter the exhaust valves a bit or the intake a bit, if you decide to go high compression or run custom applications.)

basically if you want to tinker and get your setup just right, then you will be able to.

So tell me..if adjustable cam gears do nothing, then (as an exampl)why do 10 sec crx's and civics run them while maintaining a compression higher than 10:1. the benfit is you can fine tune your ports without having to tear the head apart.

i understand what you are saying...but there will be a limit as to how far you can advance it or !Removed! it...

it will make things easier for those wanting to adjust the valvetrain system.

yeh they work well on civics etc,

but YOU CANNOT ADJUST the cams seperatly on the toyota 4e and 5e motors, there is only one cam gear on the front of the motor, both cams are driven off this one gear, so adjusting it will change both cams,

have a look at this picture and you will see what im talking about, these are custom cams for the 4efte, there is a big gear like that on both cams and the cam wheel bolts to the front of the exhaust cam, both cams are driven by the SAME pulley on the front of the engine.

i see what your getting at...i was thinking in terms of also adjusting the valvetrain to accompany the postitioning of the piston...but i that idea leads to no benefit.

No benifit at all mate,

if they had 2 cam gears like the 4age range then it would be worth it, but the 4e and 5e no benifit at all.,

All those CRX's and Civic's are either running B16's (DOHC) or B18's (again DOHC) so cam gears can change individual cams.

Most people refer to adjustable cam pulleys. The benefit with a DOHC situation with individually driven cams is that you can adjust and fine tune the inlet exhaust overlap as required.

The E series engine has a single cam pulley which are then geared together.

Hey Dale

Actually you can if you have a sizzor gear on the intake cam.

They got a bit more than the normal adjustable cam gears as they are tricky to make up but if we get some serious numbers I am willing to try get some pricing done for them.

cheers
