Just had another little odd thing happen..... From a cold start; I went about 100mtrs; I remember I was  in 3rd gear filtering into traffic when the engine went to5/6000 rpm. without the equivalent movement on speed.  I pulled in and switched off then drove away without any more occurrence  I checked the floor mat .but it was not causing any problem.Could it be a sensor... I had a new throttle fitted earlier this year.....THANKS FOR ANY IDEAS.

If the engine went to 5/6000rpm without an equivalent increase in speed then something in the transmission wasn't right ...

Is yours an auto or manual trans.?

P.S. if you could put 1.8 TR in your profile rather than just TR it saves people looking back through your posts to check what engine you have (a runaway engine can often be a diesel).

from a true cold start the engine should go to a very high idle speed (well north of 1000rpm). I am surprised that you could make it into 3rd within 100m?

Did it sound like the engine was racing at 5/6000rpm?

Get the throttle connections checked, since that has been touched!
I assume that the engine revved high when the clutch pedal was pressed, and there was no load. I notice that if the clutch is slipped then pressed fully without touching the accelerator, the engine will rev for a few seconds. The engine is compensating for the expected load. I try not to do this to avoid wearing the clutch, and keep the engine from revving unnecessarily.
Worst scenario would be your foot slipping off the clutch with high revs!
