Interior Light Problem

Hi,

A couple of years ago I changed the interior light for LEDs.

The light on the right failed yesterday, so I tried replacing it, and the replacement also didn't work.

I have several to try, so tried a few more, and none of them worked.

When I tried the first replacement, it momentarily blinked when moved, but then failed to operate. It was OFF when I was fitting them.

From what I can tell it is just a couple of contacts that squeeze on the bulb, and these are perhaps no longer contacting the bulb.

Does anyone have any suggestions for adjusting the contacts, or should I raise it as a warranty job?

The bulb fittings are correct for the holder, and the light on the left works fine.

Any help appreciated! Thanks! 🙂

I would get it done under warranty. The contacts are a pain, especially when they seize on the bulbs.

At the risk of stating something obvious, you are aware that LED bulbs (such as interior light replacements) are polarity conscious and will only work when inserted a particular way around? (plugging them in the wrong way round won't harm them but they just don't work)

does it work with the original bulb? If it does then obviously any work because it doesn't work with LEDS (assuming that you are fitting them the correct way around) wouldn't be done under warranty.

Wow... how dumb am I? I totally forgot this...

That said, I did have one light (the first replacement I tried) flicker brightly as I twisted it in the socket, but it wouldn't remain illuminated, and more twisting did nothing.

I'll have another look tomorrow, and if still nothing, then I'll get it looked at.

I'll try it, but it does look like it is the socket that is U/S (my idiocy with polarity notwithstanding).

I'm fairly sure I tried them both ways, just in case there was a better connection in the socket.

I can't say I'm a fan of the connector type.

I'll check the polarity of the bulb and try them again (I still have 8 out of the 10 I originally ordered), and will do this if I can't get them to work.

I'm assuming you have the "festoon" type of bulbs (you spoke of "twisting them" which you couldn't do with capless) in yours by your description (the same as my previous 2014 Yaris) and they are a bit of a pain. My latest (2017) Yaris has had the sockets changed to capless types which are far less trouble and a bit more positive when connecting. I've also converted mine to capless LED. Hope you get yours sorted because LEDs make such a difference in light output...

The fitting is such that they can be twisted slightly in the holder.

Mine have this type of connector (mine has LEDs all over them):

12-volt-font-b-led-b-font-interior-light

Ah right, so the same as mine then. If you can "twist" them at all, then the contacts are too loose I would suggest. On the bulbs themselves, you can carefully lever out the wire contact (the loose side) on each side of the capless base and it should give a better contact when you push them into the holder?

I'm trying this now!

Now I have the LED in the right way, it's working.   Not sure why the other one failed.

Thanks!

I changed them a couple of years ago for blue-ish LEDs - they're very slightly bluer than the footwell lights, but give a good amount of light and look great!

Worth the time to change them!

I was actually quite annoyed when I took delivery of my new Yaris in March to find that they have completely removed the footwell lights from the Excel now!

Oh no! :(  Why did they do that?

When I queried it, I was told (would you believe!) "cost-cutting and standardisation across markets"!!:bangin:

I was really annoyed about it actually as I think it is an excellent accessory for older and perhaps, less agile customers...
