Hi all

I have a 2000 E11 Corolla 1.4 4ZZFE for about a year. The dashboard lights were down to about 2 bulbs in the instrument binnacle so I got some bulbs, took out the binnacle and replaced them. I got the whole thing reassembled and now I find that the speedometer isn't working. RAGING! Does anyone know why this might be? As you pull off the needle begins to rise but then just stops right around the 0 mark and stays there. I should point out that the odometer is working perfectly which I don't understand at all. Surely they use the same sensor/circuitry?

Any advice would be much appreciated

Thanks Oldcodger. Had a look through it but I don't think my car has a speedo cable like that. The back of my binnacle has two sockets and multi point plugs. There's nowhere to screw in that old style of speedo cable. I'm certainly open to suggestions though

Have you got access to an OBD2 reader?

When I had my speedo problems I drove around with a GPS speedometer so I knew how fast I was going. I could only do this because my Corolla (which is the version prior to yours) didn't have an OBD2 connector. However I think yours does, you'll see it underneath the steering wheel towards the pedals. It'll be like the old SCART connector.

From what I found it can be one of three things:

  • VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)
  • Speedo Cable
  • Speedometer/Instrument Cluster

Using the OBD2 connector and an app on your phone (if you get the bluetooth adapter and software for Android - iPhones don't like it) you can see if it registers a speed. If it does, then it eliminates the VSS. If you don't get a speed from it, I would look to replace the VSS.

It was a pain to do on my Corolla although it's meant to be easy. I found that taking the gearbox off meant it just popped off. But your mileage may vary on that.
