Car heating up losing coolant

Hi all,

I've got Toyota Avensis 1.8 2002. Recently I found it losing coolant intermittently. Then today I heard some hissing sound from the engine and the engine temperature was also high. Heating in the car also stopped working around the same time.

I popped the bonnet as soon as I got home and found a pipe near the back of the engine steaming.

Going to have to take it to the local mechanic obviously but would like to know what everyone thinks the issue could be.

Cheers!

That is the hose to the heater matrix. I notice that the clip on the upper hose, is too far along the hose and not close to the bulkhead like the other hose. Did you or somebody else move it, and has any work been done on the engine recently? If the clip was found like that, then try and slide it back level with the other clip. It is a simple fix.
Top up with premixed coolant or antifreeze with preferably distilled water. Don't just fill with water, since the antifreeze strength will be diluted.
If any of the pipes are split, you can use a temporary substitute, but try and get a genuine replacement hose  that fits better.

Thanks. Will check that shortly and get back to you. I've not had any work done on  the car.

Will this also affect the heating inside the car?

Yes. Best not to drive far if losing coolant, especially in slow moving traffic. Being winter partially help keep the engine from overheating. From the video, the ose clip is not clamping the over hose over the heater matrix pipe, like the lower one. You need a pair of pliers just to move the clip along back to the matrix pipe connections.

Ok so clip is back in place. Not sure how that would have moved. But i've noticed when the car is warmed up there is no heating.

Googling around does this seem like a thermostat issue?  If so are they difficult to fit. What else could be the issue.

I would not worry about the heating, it took me 6 days to remove all air from coolant. The heating will gradually come but you must top up after driving and letting the car cool.

Drove the car for a bit earlier. Coolant seem to empty pretty quick and engine temperature was also going up. Can't see any leaks anywhere.

I think mine would empty half a reservoir tank after a journey when engine cold, as long as there is no more steam. You can also hear the coolant running in sometimes when you start the car.

Hi,

It might be worthwhile to replace those two clips on the entrance to the interior heater , they might have lost their tension if they are the squeeze together to release type.

A good quality jubilee clips should do it.

The thermostat could indeed be faulty/ stuck closed, that easy enough to test.

Set the car running and it should get up to normal temp or start going above normal  in 5 -10 mins

While its warming up, CAREFULLY ** feel the heat of the Top Hose from the engine to the radiator.

It should remain generally cool until the temp gets to near normal, then you should feel a dramatic increase in temp as the stat opens.

If you are still loosing water after replacing those clips and cannot see where it coming from, it might be quicker and safer to get a garage to do a pressure test on the whole cooling system.

**  Messing around a red hot water system can lead to serious injury !
