Avensis door locks new twist (1998 model)

We have had several Avensis 98-00 since they are the best

Now bought a red 1.8 station that only has one problem

Have three keys.

Will lock but not unlock with remote

Have to open with key in lock

door button will work correctly when ignition is on, except that

driver's door will lock but never unlock, all others willv lock-unlock

turn off ignition, door button works ok for a while then no unlock

if I use remote, then no unlock with door button

I put in a  new lock mechanism no change

replaced door switch no change

Tried reprogramming, but doesnt work (key in ignition, wait 10 seconds, push unlock twice - works on my other Avensis)

new batteries in remote

Now figuring it could be the wiring but dont know where to start

thinking a true Sherlock could figure out the problem

but I haven't, yet :-)

Not good. Try the sync procedure, but use the lock button instead. It works either way when I last did that a few years back. Got to try anything.

Another issue could be local radio interference. Have you tried the resync in a different, far away location. Even though you changed the batteries, did you get a dud set, and have you cleaned the internal contacts of the key remote? Get a multimeter and check the batteries. Should read well over 3V each.

The remote is ok. New batteries, over 3 volt, looks clean and shiny.

Tried programming with lock button on FOB but nothing happens.

My other Avensis is standing next to it and programs like it should.

What I can see is constant is that the driver's door never unlocks.

It is strange that door button both locks and unlocks with ignition on, but only locks with ignition off. What is the difference? If not for this, I would think of a faulty wire in the door harness

I had this issue, i.e only locks but will not open. I checked the Battery and measured 3v and the LED was very bright. So very baffled. I replaced the Battery with non-ebay. 

Then all working fine. I suspect people are selling fake ones.

Remote works both lock and unlock  for a few seconds after I turn the ignition off 

Additionally, the door button seems to work indefinitely until I use the remote - then unlock doesn't work anymore
