avensis non start

Hey not been on in pure ages since I gave the aven(tador)sis to the wife and its not been a problem

its the t25 with 1cdftv 2.0 d4d at 117k miles

she called me today as it wouldn't start  outside her work. ( said it was struggling to hit 70 on mway on way to work)

egr has been blanked for a few years so that's not the issue.

So I was out in decent clothes and my own car doing the Christmas rush stuff and so I diverted with minimal tools not wanting to get too dirty

car cranked ( no smoke) no start , no warning lights or codes apart from the p0400 ive always had as a historical egr flow fault that logs due to it being blanked. ( only because it sees more air coming through maf sensor when it thinks egr should be open) never a problem

engine oil and coolant spot on so not indicating anything major just yet.

I primed the filter head but it had resistance telling me fuel was coming from tank to filter atleast ( filter put on 8k miles ago)

got engine kicking over and running on some brake cleaner telling me cam/belt/valves/compression is ok.( belt and water pump done last summer) the engine seemed to fire up and I told wife to release the revs.

At that point ( while the wife was still holding the key at start position while revving) the starter gave a horrible noise and engine kinda cut out as if starter seized .

now then now then.

engine no crank and saps away all power to all lights on dash etc- ---give starter a hit with the umberella I had in the boot,, and it poorly whimpered to try and start but no where near enough oomph.

so as I see it. it is struggling to get fuel be it an air leak / blocked filter or something more sinister with the pump or injector driver unit

plugged in autocom as above and says all good immobiliser and everything else with no indication of anything wrong.

so it now being friday 22nd dec ive reserved a starter motor and fuel filter to be picked up tomorrow

But first ill go up with my van and strip off starter motor for inspection and give it a n insulation test due to the apparent dead short it now gives when trying to start----, check the engine turns free enough etc with nothing broken up inside there,    And have a look  about the fuel lines pumping diesel to hp pump before committing to spending £100

Time is tight for me this weekend , is there any hidden filter in line I'm not aware of?

And yes it be better now thinking about breakdown cover but never needed it in 20 odd years .

ill let yous know how I get on tomorrow

I did a Google Search and they appear to have bad reviews. Mine went a few months ago I got a refurbished one. Though try carparts4less there sister site, even Amazon.

I did change the spark plugs afterwards. Just to play it safe. Have not changed the ignition coils as the Denso ones are too expensive. Just bought a cheap Nordic one to try out next year. But a starter motor is more complex than 2 wires wrapped around each other so I would either get a big name oem one or a refurbished one.

As it was water in diesel it was a race against time for the pump and injectors.

After fitting new starter and fuel filter Basically ran a remote drum of diesel to hp pump and flung half a bottle redex in drum Cracked injector pipes. And cawed over a bit at a time so starter didnt fry itself.  till blackish tinge from the redex showed at fuel pipes.

Needed a squirt of brake cleaner via the breather pipe to get started. Ran a bit rough for a few miles then cleared.

Starts off key now. Hopefully be ok in the morn

Just a couple pics from todays antics. Gonna change the filter again in a couple weeks. Maybey a bad last at petrol pump fill up. Maybey the cold weather condensation build up cause wife sticks a tenner in tank at a time.
