Avensis fuel consumption increased

Hi folks,

Recently I noticed that my Avensis T3X 2006, 1.8 petrol is doing about 90 miles less per tank. It used to be 470-500 miles per tank, and now only 400. Is it because of winter? I checked the oil level and is ok. The only thing I noticed that when I press gas all the way down to get speed on motorways then after few minutes I can feel some burn smell inside car. It's not tyre definitely (with 130bhp It's impossible to burn the tyres on 5th gear:) ). Don't know to worry or not yet.

I get 390 miles, no motorway driving. Though when I changed spark plugs to cheaper Iridium twin tip denso mpg decreased from 39 to 35? Maybe you need new spark plugs?

Would have said its likely due to winter, my MPG always drops this time of year.

My mpg on my 1.8 has dropped from 40mpg to 36mpg in the past 8 weeks.  Wet roads (seem to make a noticeable difference) and colder temps (likewise) account for this in my opinion.  All rural road driving (3-15 mile journeys) no dual carriageway. Says 460ish on range when filled up (but still 100 miles left in tank when I reach 0 on range).

Had burning smell when got a stone trapped behind brake pad, apparently prone to this according to garage. Unlikely to be your issue but you never know!

  • 2 weeks later...

With new full tank I drove much more careful, with no harsh acceleration or breaking, no overtaking on 5th gear. And, as a result, I made 485 miles from full tank with 7 litres still in the tank when I filled up after. That's 50/50 town/motorway. And no burning smell any more. So, I have no idea what it was.

I've just done about 520m on a full tank, (1.8 7A-FE 2000yr) with about 450 of that all motorway, trying to stay around 70-80mph, with lots of heavy rain, newly inflated tyres (32psi) and to be honest, was a little disappointed, although I'm well overdue for a plugs change
