Changing the coolant

Morning all, I’m going to service the avensis today and was thinking of doing the coolant, forgive my ignorance but how often does it need changing and how do I know if it needs doing?

Hi Thom. Generally every 2 years with standard coolant, but if using long life It depends on the quality of the coolant and when you last changed it. Also if you had to top up and only used water, which obviously weakens the properties of the coolant. I have a coolant tester and so long as there is a good reading, I would leave. 
I tend to use pre-mixed stuff, because the impurities of the water coming out of my tap. If I did use coolant that needed mixing, I would use distilled water.
