Fuel consumption and exhaust fumes

Hi.

I have a new yaris orange edition purchased 3 months ago. I am new to toyota however wanted to downgrade to smaller car from honda CRV diesel. I find the car very smooth the drive although lacking power with only a 1.33 petrol engine and my thought initially was that fuel economy would/should be great. Well NO. I am nearly never above the 3k rpm and follow the gear up/down indicstor 95% of the time yet i never seem to go above the 37mpg. I did 2.5k miles now mostly 70% motorway. Also the fumes are sometimes overwelming even when the car is on temp its very gassy and i feel there is some engine management/ fuel management problem. My mpg is lower than the 2.2 diesel suv which i think is out of order. Please advise if this is normal before i go down the dealer route any help is Much appreciated.

The 1.33 was replaced by a 1.5 in the Spring of 2017. So as yours was purchased 3 months ago, presumably it was a pre-reg?

From the Honest John Real mpg info for the Yaris 1.33, owners are getting between 36 and 58mpg - https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/toyota/yaris-and-yaris-hybrid-2011/133-vvt-i

Cold weather always has a detrimental effect on fuel consumption, and as your car has only done 2.5K, it will still be tight and probably won't deliver its best mpg until it has done a few more miles.

As regards the fumes, take it into a dealer.

Thanks for quick reply mate. I thought the same initially but its due to orange edition only veing available in 1.33 and car was only registered end of september 17. Maybe i should indeed just be patient but id have thought even with it not ran it should not be at the lower end of the range (36). Also many say now a days cars dnt need driven in and should deliver almost rightaway! I dnt knw how to take statement like that though

Your average modern car doesn't need running in the same way as of old but that doesn't mean that it won't improve as it puts a good few thousand miles under it's belt.

You sound to be getting the kind of fuel economy I'd expect, especially as you say you do a lot of motorway driving (I'm guessing at 70 MPH?). Even the Hybrid doesn't do so well at 70 MPH (relatively speaking - I get about 55 MPG at this speed). Simple physics unfortunately.

Even on the motorway I cruise along at around 50 MPH (unless the traffic situation means it is safer to go faster), in order to get much better fuel economy. The difference between 50 and 70 MPH is huge.
