Waze or Google Maps on screen

Hi there, Newbie here.
Is it possible to bypass the in car Sat/Nav and use my phone's Waze or Google Maps apps instead. i.e. connect the smart phone to the display.

I'm not convinced about the in car Sat/Nav.

Both Waze and Google Maps update and re-calculate the route in real-time from a huge central server which allows the User to avoid traffic snarl ups before they happen. 

The Icon Tech model doesn't seem to do this. Am I missing something?
