Mis-fuelling

what is the consequence of mis-fueling a 63 plate avensis tourer  diesel. ran short distance, drained ,flushed and refilled, ranok for 40 iles in 8 mile journies now after stopping engine will not restart as if fuel system is airlocked. any advise?

How short a distance did you run it for? The diesel fuel is also usually used as a lubricant for the fuel pump, petrol strips away that effect so the fuel pump may be damaged.

after drawing off fuel and refilling I put some diesel lubricant / exhaust cleaner to tank. since then on the first fill of 48 litres of Ultimate I also added some injector cleaner.
