Hi, I just bought a 2005 Aygo for my girlfriend and I am wondering if anyone can shed any light on whether any of these was a limited edition/ factory options or if they have been added afterwards. It has a roof spoiler, centre exit TTE exhaust (so different rear bumper) front fog lights, front corner plates on the front bumper and part leather interior. I have attached a few pics.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi there

What a beauty, congrats guys.

From what i can see, most of those parts appear to be genuine TTE parts, optional extras, impossible to say whether they were fitted at the factory as a customer order ...or maybe by a dealership as a demo vehicle...or fitted months/years later by an owner.

The seats are definitely an expensive optional extra, ive no idea what the lettering Transcal means though, havent seen that before, i assume it means something to a previous owner out there, a name maybe.

You listed all the parts except some side skirts which i assume it does have.

And finally, those front spats, hard to to tell as the vehicle is black and the pic isnt all that clear, but they dont appear to look like the genuine TTE ones, they look alot more minimal, as the genuine TTE ones are minimal to start with, unless they were damaged and modified by somebody to save what was left of them.

The fog lamps btw are standard on the Sports models.

Wishing you guys the best, she’s a little beauty.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for the fast reply and welcome! Yes, it does have small side skirts that fit underneath. I think they were factory fitted as the colour match is perfect. I will get a better picture of the front spats when I pick it up. Transcal are the people that make the seats (I did a bit of a google and they were selling some of the covers on ebay)

My last Toyota was a 440bhp Celica GT-Four so this one is a bit more sedate lol

Well I picked the car up last night.. must have been really low on fuel as £40 of fuel did not brim the tank! .. few niggles, most of which I have answered with the use of the search function... boot button was sticking, solved with a bit of silicone spray.

The air con switch does not stay pushed in but lights up ok when you hold it in and the air con kicks in ok so ordered a new switch. Hazard light switch is also tempremental so have ordered a new one of them as well.

The reason it does not look like it has the TTE front spoiler is the middle bit is broken off, so it has the corner bits but that is it.

The clutch is pretty high on the pedal but that seems pretty cheap to change. Driven the car around all morning and really impressed with it so far !

Congrats BikeLoon, i’m sure your other half will love the experience that the Aygo gives, all the rattles, yet all the thrills, and that vintage mini classic feel lol, keeps you alive! I recon my Aygo has its moods, just like me. I have a new rattle coming from the drivers side dash, started after i replaced the front Speakers, stripped the speaker down again but i cant seem to source the issue, everything has been insulated and tucked away neatly.

Anyhoo, re.fuel, ive filled Up twicesince buying my Aygo, and i paid dead 43.50 on each occassion...and to the brim brim!!! So i recon a few more pounds would have brimmed you too.

Your replacement switches should resolve your issues, i only had the cracked Hazard switch issue which is common, which i replaced new via my dealership.

Re.those front spats, i did think that might be the case, hence which is why i didnt go for them, at £195.00+ even my dealership reconec that they were “Day Light Robbery” for what they are, and they discounted them to £149.00 but we still declined, they appear very flimsy...and doesnt look like they’d take much to break them. There is a Toyota version of a front spat at £67.00 or there abouts but sadly out of stock at all dealerships in the U.K, unsure about the rest of europe though, but they look much better and more solid. The other option is an aftermarket front skirt. Or in your case you could just leave what you have as they are, maybe even try fabricating them yourself!

Clutches do appear cheap for these vehicles, i intend to buy the kit and diy the job, save on labour, thats when the time comes, currently it seems to have life left in her, although 1st and Reverse can be a pain in the you know, worse ive noticed when im nervous with someone waiting behind me lol.

Best of luck guys.

To be fair, there are no rattles or anything on it all.. changing the switches looks a nice simple job as well. Only other annoying thing is there is no key for the locking wheel nuts and the seller seems to think it would be in the car somewhere and is being of no help, so hopefully they arent going to be too hard to remove.

I will leave it as is, it has a minor scrape on the N/S/R corner already so I figure the front skirt can stay as is, it kinda looks like its meant to be where it does anyway!

Had fun pottering around in it, might even take it to work tomorrow...will be cheaper than my Porsche lol

Wow. Count yourself lucky my dear friend...no rattles...seriously! The 1st rattle i had to sort was the rear glass tailgate...earth shattering it was...yet a few squirts of white grease at the hinges and bliss ever since...probably why i can hear all the other rattles...currently my dash one i mentioned...the passenger seat whilst positioned to the rear...annoying as hell...but pull it forward and its fine...and added to that is my daughters new car seat which cant be helped lol.

The switches are an easy peasy diy job...prise forward your heater control knob carefully...undo the little screw...then carefully prise forward the console unit itself...i found the rear plugs so hard to take out when i did my hazard switch...in the end i managed one...and then twisted the console around and just replaced what i needed.

Funny, i had that exact same problem when i bought my Aygo, drove 10 miles away from the seller, stopped at a petrol station, filled up, checked trye presurres...and then realised...heyyyy no alloy key...rang seller...waited half hour for a callback...found key...had thrown it out with all the rubbish in the car prior to sale...drove back to seller...and then the 120 mile journey home.

I do hope you get them removed, no idea how much it’d cost, but replacement locks on eBay are pretty cheap if you decide to replace them!

I agree, a great cheap little run around compared to our 2.0 diesel avensis chipped at about 190bhp my other half tells me lol

Proof of ownership and a photo of the nut and your local dealer can supply a new key for around £15

Ahh its a cute little car and drives really well. I am used to a convertible so maybe thats why I dont hear the rattles anymore and this seems quiet by comparison.

Well the seller is about as much use as a chocolate fire guard and does not know where the key is.

I taxed the Aygo today, kinda of ironic paying £20 for the year on the same day my £45 a month one goes out for my car lol

Awesome, I will pop down to my local dealer in the morning and see, thanks for the help.

They look similar to locking nuts I had on my two Auris.

Found the slip of paper with the key code on in the service folder so that makes life easier

An interesting car, good find! Very rare to find any mods on these cars. I am not sure that the leather seats would be a factory fit (although the TTE parts probably are) given the Transcal logos. Have you any paperwork which relates to them? In any event, leather in the mk1 Aygo is as rare as hens teeth so nice pickup.

It would be a lovely base for further mods if you are that way inclined. Out of interest, are you comfortable in sharing the purchase price/mileage?

Yes it is a bit different I thought! It has covered 70,000 miles with 3 previous owners. It has all the manuals from new but only service history until 2009 (it covered a whopping 10,000 miles in the first 4 years!). The mileage adds up when I checked the MOT history on line.  I wont modify it further as it is for the girlfriend as she is learning to drive so it will stay as is. Nothing in the paperwork about the interior but when I google Aygo Transcal they do come up as a leather refinisher for this model of car.

There is a small parking scrape on the n/s/r arch but apart from that the body and interior is in good shape. It was advertised for £1,495 but as the clutch is right at the top of the pedal I managed to negotiate it down to £1,150, My friend runs a garage that specialises in Toyota and he has said 2 - 3 hours labour for the clutch at the kits seem to be about £60 on eBay so that will be a cheap change to do but I will leave that for a bit.

Took the Aygo for an oil and filter change to day and they adjusted the clutch cable and all is good. They said that most people assume when its high on tyhe pedal that the clutch needs changing as most cars have an automatic adjustment system, where the Aygo is manual Happy days

All looking good so far, congrats.

I dont suppose you watched how he adjusted the clutch by any chance did you, wouldnt mind doing my baby.

Nope but it only took them a few minutes

Just been out to adjust it again as I think the pedal was too low and it is a doddle... as per the video, just tug the cable towards the bulkhead before you twist the adjuster as there is a plastic lock mechanism on it.

Done some research and the reason why a lot of Aygo clutches wear out is people do not get the cable adjusted and as it wears and the pedal gets higher, if there is no slack on the pedal at all, the release bearing does not fully release so its akin to riding the clutch with your foot.

Well I have had the Aygo for a week now and so far everything that has needed doing has been a very easy fix.

Air con switch

Hazard light switch

Lubricated the boot switch to stop it sticking

Removed mirror covers to lubricate the cables so now the adjusters work

Adjusted the clutch biting point.

All of the above jobs in total took under 15 minutes and a total of £40.

Totally different world to my Porsche lol

Glad you're getting all tbe niggly bits sorted. They really are easy cars to maintain, and very simple in design. The main common issue can be corroded/rusty fixings which added hours to the job when I replaced my suspension.

The price you paid sounds like a steal to me. I would ne very happy with that!

Re the clutch, the main failure is not so much the wear, its the fact that the 3 torsion straps on the clutch cover can snap, one by one over time. This leads to noisy, rattling, unusable clutches and causes problems with disengaging properly. The fact that the original clutch was a small diameter is a secondary issue- they just are not man enough for the job and so when pulling away quickly from a standing start they can slip/get hot/snap the straps.

I am paranoid about mine failing and I do not know if mine is the upgraded bigger diameter so I never give it welly from a standstill. I have never had rattles/slippage but I am still worried about it I have to say. Maybe one day I will just get it changed to be sure.

Did you find the mirror housings a pain to get off? It is not uncommon for the plastic tangs to snap off, which is a shame because corrosion of the mirror adjusting cables is also another common problem!

Posted

I popped the left housing off easy enough, to be fair on the right side I just tilted the mirror and sprayed behind the glass on each side, then moved it around to get it freed off

Well I fitted a glove box today.. doddle to fit, didnt even need the screws. I like the way that catch matches the trim on the door as its a Toyota one, makes the interior look much better for £26 I think!

Hi Bike-loon

Im glad to read that all is going well...and that you are enjoying the experience of ownership with these likkle vehicles.

I added a glove box lid some weeks ago, and i agree, it makes the cabin look much cleaner.

To update, i added a rev counter that i purchased second hand but as good as new, a doddle to fit and looks really cute in my opinion.

I need your expertise on my side mirrors please, since purchase the inner mirror adjusters did nothing, so ive been adjusting my mirror glass by thumb, however today i decided to go out and spray some white grease to the rear of each mirror without removing the actual unit, i have no idea if its worked, getting the straw in coming off the white grease spray can was a challenge, however how did you manage this fix? The mirror glass on each side seem pretty stiff on mine, do you think i’d have overhaul the units to get to the cables? No idea what they even look like!

Posted

I already have a rev counter being the "Sport" version lol, but yeah they add to the interior too.

On the mirrors, I used GT85 ( bit like WD40 ) as it is thinner and penetrates and creeps easier. Just tilt the mirror to the side and give a good squirt in the gap, then do the same with the other side and top and bottom. If you want you can pry the mirror cover off and spray some through the hole that the 3 cables go through.

After that move the mirror glass around by hand to loosen it all up and when it moves more freely, you will find that it will work fine using the adjuster in the car.
