Upgrading Auris headunit

Hey all,

So, a friend of mine has recently gotten an Auris, but wants to upgrade the headunit to the Satnav one for both the satnav but mainly for the bigger screen for the reversing camera, which I gather currently displays on the rear-view mirror?

So, first of all, is that even possible? I don't see how the picture for the reversing camera would magically swap to the satnav screen if he installed it. Can you just drop-in the Auris satnav headunit and have it just work?

Second, what would he need - He was saying he was looking at headunits on eBay but there were a few different ones, which he wasn't sure about on compatibility, and also apparently there is a second piece that apparently goes in the boot somewhere?? Do any of you know what he's talking about??

Any light you can shine on this would be appreciated!

What year Auris and which current head unit do they have?

2011 and whatever the T-Spirit comes with as standard I guess...?

(I actually thought the T-Spirit came with a satnav headunit as standard but apparently it was an option?!)

Is it a TNS or a Touch & Go unit?

I suspect that it may be significantly cheaper to go with a 3rd party solution than Toyota oem unless he can pick up (relatively) cheaply on eBay etc.

I haven't actually seen the car yet so I couldn't say - What should I ask him to check?

If it has a number on the front of it somewhere (often bottom right). A photo of it also could be of use.

Also, the  version no. that it is running (usually found in "System Information")  could help.

Apparently the existing headunit one is one of these:

Is that any help??

whilst I am sure that he could upgrade to the satnav version of the time unless he could pick one up cheaply on eBay he would be paying a lot for outdated technology.

Perhaps something like  a Pioneer AVIC-F980DAB  would be better (check that it has an input for the reversing camera - was that an oem fitting camera or a 3rd party accessory)? If he wants to go with some no-name unit imported direct from China etc. someone like Konrad is probably better able to advise.

Get a good installer.

As I understand it, his primary motivation for doing this is not for the satnav, but for the big screen the satnav headunit comes with.

So he basically wants to get e.g. this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-Auris-Radio-Stereo-CD-Main-HeadUnit-86140-02030-SAT-NAV-COMPATIBLE-SCREEN/112731449714

and just do a straight swap and have everything magically work, including the OE reversing camera sending its picture to the satnav screen instead of the rv mirror.

However, I am more skeptical about this, so I said I'd ask on here whether it's actually possible... Also, apparently there is this thing:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TOYOTA-TOUCH-GO-EU-SAT-NAV-NAVIGATION-SYSTEM-MODULE-AURIS-AVENSIS-RAV4/401463783073

...which is apparently part of the system but we don't know if you actually need it or where it would even go...!

Waaitaminute... did the Auris actually have an option to have a reversing camera without the satnav headunit???

I don't think it did, which would suggest the one in his car is actually an aftermarket one... can anyone confirm/deny this?

If it's an oe reversing camera then presumably it's cabled to the mirror so that would need to be rerouted or extended to the head unit.

The unit of the time would possibly have been a Touch head unit which is a modular system with the addition of the satnav module, GPS aerial etc. making it a Touch & Go. https://www.toyota-tech.eu/aimuploads/da5286a0-b2e2-4d41-bb68-c269dbd8d2b5/Auris_Touch_and_Go_RHD_PZ490_00331_00_AIM_002_405_1.pdf

Check that the 2 links that you posted are compatible with each other but you probably need someone like Devon Aygo to confirm all of the above.

that's why I asked ...

If 3rd party the camera may well connect wirelessy to the mirror display unit.

Well I'll wait for someone to chime in - If reversing camera *without* satnav headunit was never a possible OE option, I'll have to assume the reversing camera is 3rd party; As it stands I can't check and I doubt he would be able to tell whether it is or not unless someone can tell him what to look for!

Nope, I'm wrong - The Auris *DID* have a reverse camera without the satnav headunit as standard, at least in the T-Spirit spec, so it is stock.

Do any of you lot have an Auris HSD T-Spirit without the satnav who fitted it after?

For those of you that have an Auris HSD T-Spirit *with* satnav, do you get a reverseing picture on the satnav display *and* the rear-view mirror or just the satnav?

The second link to the nav unit shows a Touch unit as fitted to a MK2 Auris this will not fit a Mk1. As for the camera see:

https://www.toyota-tech.eu/aimuploads/{A7CCBF33-AA20-4B71-2E48-A540FAC3AA20}/Auris_Back_Camera_PZ473_E9140_00_AIM_001_546_3.pdf

For a list of navigation types compatible with a Mk1 Auris see:

https://www.toyota-tech.eu/Aim/Aim.aspx?pubtype=AIM&menuitem=2

If you are looking for a nav system from an Auris bare in mind even the latest version compatible with a Mk1 Auris will be 5 years old and based on technology considerably older than that, with minimal effort ( adaptor frame, adaptor harness etc ) any double even single din headunit will fit and offer a much more modern system

There are a few options to upgrade to NAV and they have been covered in Toyota forums

The Auris may be similar.

I will post the other options later.

if you buy a secondhand satnav unit like we did make sure you get the wiring cables that are needed

theres one on the top of the sat nav unit and 2 other cables to connect the headunit and nav unit together

one is for the aerial you can get a gps antenna for £10 new

see attached image for cables and part number for the original touch headunit

Does anyone know if there's a viable upgrade/non oem replacement for the facelift MK2 Auris with Touch and Go with nav? It would have to have on screen configuration of car options like the stock unit does.

Do you really mean Touch & Go or Touch 2 with Go? I would have thought that a 2016 Auris was Touch 2?

What don't you like about Touch 2 (yes, it's not perfect but I doubt that you are going to do much better without spending a chunk of change)? & on that note, budget?

Yeah, Toyota's naming convention is not the best is it. The one I have is Touch 2 with Go Plus. I'm pretty sure it doesn't get much worse than this, based on past experiences. If only there were no no radio/nav related options on it I wouldn't even hesitate to look for a replacement. Even the early Denso units back in the first half of the naughties were snappier and more straightforward to use. And had physical controls!

I don't have an issue with Toyota's naming convention (Touch 2 is the 2nd generation of Touch which seems logical to me) but other people seem less precise in their usage.

If you have Plus then you should have Voice control? As I said on another of your posts my Avensis Touch 2 with Go has (multiple) physical controls so I am surprised that the Auris doesn't.
