2016 Diesel Consumption

Hi All , I have a 2016 2.0 Diesel Avensis Excel estate, BMW engine I use it as a taxi it does 32-35 MPG ! My last car was 2003-2006 Avensis 2.0 D4D it did approx 40 MPG same driving . Toyota dealer says there is nothing wrong and gives a load of bull about new engines with more emission  controls etc so makes it heavier on juice . Seems a bit off , I thought the idea was to use less juice not more in the newer more advanced engines ? Anyone have similar experience on consumption?

How do you drive it? I mostly find the D4Ds to be very frugal if you try to keep them below the turbo threshold, usually around 2000rpm.

I've only driven older ones like the 1ND-TV and 1CD-FTV which had less emissionsy crap bolted to them tho'...

Even though it is a taxi I drive it pretty easy , low revs . I really did expect to increase my MPG a bit using an engine with 15 years newer technology , not the opposite . Not so surprised though with Toyota dealer saying everything is ok . MPG is just so off compared to the advertising hype you would think the dealer would investigate further

Legally car manufacturers have to use the EU fuel consumption information when advertising and selling vehicles. The EU figures were never intended to reflect real world fuel consumption - they are obtained from a laboratory based testing regime which provides a standard comparison tool for people to compare fuel consumption between models, and in recent years the gap between the testing regime and real world consumption has widened. A new testing regime has now been introduced which hopefully will provide more realistic information.

Honest John's Real mpg pages shows the average consumption owners are getting - https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/toyota/avensis-touring-sports-2015/16-d-4d

I think that you will find that your new car is heavier than your old one. It is also definitely fitted with a DPF where your old one probably didn't have one - if it is having to actively regenerate then it will use diesel to do so.

Mercedes reckon that the change from the old NEDC test to the new WLTP will see a drop of something like 22% in advertised fuel economy & even then they say that real world figures will still probably be lower again ...

Actually, from SAM's thread, have you tried taking it out for a good hilly high RPM thrash? Maybe the DPF and injectors etc. are full of crap.

As the DPF fills up it badly affects performance because it's like the car has developed asthma and can't breath properly.

Filling it full of V-Power diesel and going for a hoon can do wonders to the feel of the engine!

Not entirely relevant to your situation, but I have a 65 plate 1.6d estate and I do 100 mile a day commute, 95% on motorways. My average MPG over the last year ( using an app to calculate) is 60mpg. I generally stick to about 65mph using the cruise control. When I am off work and just driving around town it drops to around 50mpg. I use millers each fill up.

I have done the forced regen , 2500-3000 rpm constant for 15-20 mins when i get the message on the dash to say the DPF is full but it doesn't make a difference to the consumption , car has just been in for diagnostic check so i presume they did the update. I also have a 2012 520D BMW , same basic engine does about 45 mpg around town driving , i know there are mods on the engine but still doesn't seem to make sense

Perhaps they did the update?, When mine went in for it they said a couple of hours, I later got a call to say they needed it until the next day, no problems as I had a loan car, but talking to one of the technicians when I collected it it appears that they have to get BMW to do the update? and that was the delay.

I guess Devon aygo will know?.
