Noise When Idling

When I first bought my 2000 GLS 2.0 Avensis I was amazed at how quiet the engine was. However, it has gradually developed a rumbling noise and rattling when idling. Some times louder than others. It sounds like it is coming from ancilliary equipment, rather than the engine itself. Phil, my mechanic first thought it was the water pump, but now seems to think that it could be the air conditioning. Mileage 107,000. Anyone else experienced this problem?

i don't want to worry you but i had a noise coming from my engine like that! and it happen to be the the bearsing were broken on the 4th piston ( )

BUT thats my personal view.

it might be worth driving the car easy rather than ragging it.

the other thing it could be is a blocked idle jet!

The cambelt tensioner is prone to going on these engines.. and can sometimes sound like you describe.. worth checking out asap.
