2008 Yaris D4D - faulty EGR, I'm not so sure

Hi

The wife runs a 2008 Yaris D4D. We've had it for 3 years and 50k miles. Serviced yearly with Toyota.

Usage includes 5 miles per day run to work (3-4 days p/w) and usually an additional 100 or so miles of motorway driving.

A few days ago the car had a range of 10 miles. Wife reported a loss of power and shuddering. She described it like running out of fuel.

Luckily she was a mile from filling up. Once she did it ran smoothly until yesterday when I drove her to work.

The car lost all power. Foot on the floor nothing, then suddenly regained power. Running like it's misfiring and then cut out. Engine light came on.

Local dealer says code relates to EGR fault and recommends replacement. I'm not so sure as the car gets a good old blast weekly.

Do these symptoms sound like a faulty EGR? Could I clean it easily enough, access is quite tight in the engine bay.

Any help would be great

You could try using a tin of this and then going for a long drive, where you are driving in a gear to keep the revs above 3000. This should blow any nasty crud out of the system.

It's easy enough to use, usually just need to remove air filter!

Thanks for the tip. Bought a can earlier but no joy I'm afraid. The EGR looks quite tricky to access on my 08 Yaris too. Thinks it's described as a EGR cooler.

Has it had the fuel filter replaced since you've owned it? At 50,000+ miles that could be at fault and a cheap and simple fix.
