End of pleasure driving

So it's been planned slowly most road network (mainly motorways) are to be covered in long 'smart' sections sooner or later. How do you guys feel about this?

Safety is one thing but for me even though I don't speed much, these cameras will make driving a nuisance. Imagine constantly looking at your speedometer. I guess it will be down 65mph in 70mph zones now. Quite annoyed to be honest.

Nothing but a money grab imo and I do agree that people will be glued to their speedos instead of the road. I think the motorists safety is only mentioned to validate claims. I personally thing it's more dangerous coming round a bend to find someone doing 20mph under the limit

Huge, stupid waste of money. And for what? It's done sod-all for congestion and just made the motorways an order of magnitude more dangerous!

If anything they seem to be causing *more* traffic jams than they did before with the random speed limit changes and nowhere for distressed vehicles to go!

With the M1, the hard shoulder only ever seems to be a lane when there is no traffic; As soon as there's congestion it turns back into a hard shoulder and the speed limit is set to 60 which just makes it worse!

With the M25, they just seem to randomly change the speed limit - One stretch went from blank to NSL to 40mph to 60 to 50 to 40 then blank (Which I assume is NSL??). What the hell is up with that?! Most drivers now just flat out ignore the signs and just go at the pace of prevailing traffic, unless it's a 40 which just triggers panic braking just before the gantry. I'm surprised there are not more rear-enders!

Worse yet, the highways agency is NOT keeping an eye on their cameras - There seems to be at least one breakdown every other day and I have *never* seen a lane closure posted when I've witnessed this, which means lorry drivers are having to try and dodge out of the way at the last minute or try to scrape past because they have no where to go due to traffic.

When I *do* see a lane closure sign, I *never* see a broken down vehicle - Presumably the vehicle has already been moved, but the highways agency hasn't noticed yet.

The worst thing is that because this keeps happening, drivers srae starting to IGNORE the lane closure signs and speed on the less congested lane until they actually see an obstruction, which leads to them forcing their way into the next lane, triggering more panic braking and making the traffic build up even worse!

Hell, last easter, we had a blow out while taking my dad's Verso to my brother's - First the AA sent a normal van, who on approach called me to inform me he wasn't allowed to stop due to there being no hard shoulder and drove on, and the highways agency didn't notice for 30 long minutes with me and my brother freezing out asses off standing in brambles on the other side of the barrier. When they finally *did* notice, they closed that section of the M25 for another 30 minutes until a highways agency 4x4 got to us and escorted us to the nearest layby, driving on our flat tyre!

It's a -'king joke. Whoever decided widening the motorway on the cheap at the expense of driver safety should be sacked and imprisoned IMHO!

I never really much of an opinion on it until I'd experienced how !Removed! terrifying it is, first hand, to break down with no where to safely pull over to!

Those with cruise control and/or speed limiter can just set the speed accordingly. Even the Aygo has a speed limiter on versions above the 'X'.

I don't have cruise control in my car. Not everyone has cruise control in their car and even then you are responsible for anything going wrong.

Agreed. It is a joke, most of the time when there is a lane closure or stupid limit like 30 on m25, I can never see any broken down vehicles. They're slow as hell to respond and probably low on manpower to operate efficiently. Maybe that's why they need cameras to fund themselves. It is so annoying, I feel paranoid about my speed all the time. Everyone also travels like robots really close to each other in these zones.

Uttering road 'safety' helps them look good.

Haven't said everyone has cruise control. What I did imply was that those with either cruise and/or a speed limiter won't necessarily be constantly looking at the speedometer.
