Carina E 1.6 4AFE - Which spark plugs?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've got a Spanish Toyota Carina Saloon 1.6 4AFE with code AT190L-BEMDKW, and I'm trying to work out which spark plugs I need. I think it was manufactured 12/1995 according to the VIN, and registered 01/1996. Unfortunately I do not have the owners handbook.

I'm pretty sure it's not lean burn despite having an econo light (picture of my engine here - apologies for the quality!) which matches up with the non lean burn shown here (although it is in Russian! I'm guessing poor refers to the lean burn?).

The haynes manual lists Champion RC7YCC4 with a gap of 1.1mm for 1.6 non lean burn engines (Denso Equivalent K22PR-U11), although this may only apply to cars sold in the UK?

The Denso site has a large number of options for the 1.6 with the majority of gaps being 0.8 rather than the 1.1 specified in the Haynes.

If I put my VIN on the Toyota EPC site, it comes back with a choice of Bosch FR7KC (Denso K20-RU equivalent, gap of 0.8) or Denso K16R-U11 (gap of 1.1mm).

Toyodiy lists Bosch FR7KC (0.8mm) when I put my VIN in there.

Is there any way I can find out what the gap should be and which plugs I need?

Thanks in advance!

Two routes into this....

4afe = search eBay for spark plugs.

AT190 = same again.

Dealer enquiry (on the phone) with VIN.

..... Compare dealer recommended with eBay for equiv/cheapest.. ??

How am I doing....

Thanks for that! I've had a good trawl through eBay but it's pretty inconclusive as there's listings with 1.1mm and 0.8mm.

I think I've shed a bit more light on it:

For Carina E, without TWC, K16R-11U was recommended with a correct gap of 1.1mm, with TWC already K20R-U with a gap of 0.9mm, which should be properly reduced to 0.8mm.

The above was taken from this polish forum: http://avensis.info/viewtopic.php?f=72&t=13379&sid=6e6ddd5fd1f8c742a4cb67c1ed40a733

I think it is referring to a three way catalyst? So if a carina e has a three way catalyst it needs the 0.8mm spark plugs, otherwise 1.1mm.

So I just need to work out if I have a three way catalyst... Any ideas?
