RAV4 mk3 Petrol stalling and low revs after alternator reconditioned

Hi all,

I have a RAV4 mk3 AUTO, Petrol

The alternator started making a whinning noise with a burning rubber smell.  Had the alternator reconditioned.  When drove out of the garage the car stalled and revs low approx 500.

Reading some posts suggest its happening because the Battery was left disconnected, hence the computer lost memory.

I have since drove the car approx 100 miles , even though not stalling still the revs mostly low and occasionaly get a weird sound like a diesel engine running when in reverse, as soon as put in neutral its fine.

There was NO sounds before the alternator replaced

Could this be related to the alternator or how its fitted??

regards

Kal

Maybe the tension on the alternator belt is too tight?

The noise in reverse only may be a gearbox bearing.

thank you for your reply , the mechanic said the belt does not require tension setting , its auto?  Is this correct?

Probably, but automatic tensioners can fail, and one has to ask whether the belt was replaced with a Toyota part?

I'm sure the alternator belt tensioner on my MK3 is manual not automatic.

  • 3 weeks later...

showed it to another mechanic , he also said auto tensioner.

Anyway, i have noticed the revs now only drop to 500 when in D(drive) and are OK in idle approx 800.

Any thoughts?

And feel the car hesitates when moving from a junction as if it will stall.
