Health check

Took the wifes car to the stealers for the airbag recall, hadn't had the letter from DVLA like our other car but we know someone at toyota who checked the cars history and they don't give out the paper work, now its all computerized which isn't a problem, but hey if it needs doing. It didn't take them long, but then out came the clip board, morning sir we've given your yaris a health check while its here, luvley car by the way, but it has a few issues, now I'm very picky when looking at cars both under and over and bearing in mind we've only had it 3mths, but out came the list, slight leak at the condensor on your air con, needs a new seal/pipe £316.07 while we're doing that your air con needs a service £65.00, one rear Continental tire is down to 4mm WTF difference does that make its legal and they wanted to replace it with a nexen £58.13 also your rear wiper blade smears slightly £19.94 so what, and to cap it all comes up with, your fuel filler neck is corroded but not leaking £232.49. I've looked at all these jobs and can't find them, well I can the filler neck but its not that bad plus I thought they would have told me coils and brake lines have a bit of rust as well. This filler neck issue is under the car, so what, I would expect a 7yr old car to show some rust by now, but in total the repairs Toyota said needed doing totaled up to £691.63 did I get them done naaaaaaaaa. Now it might have been a different story, had the wife took the car in, it would have frightened her to death, but the moral of the story is, if the boot was on the other foot and I was looking to purchase a car from Toyota and I came up with a similar list, do you think they would do them, no way, I'd be told if the car doesn't meet your standards look at another one or something to that effect. I could go on and on about stealers, that's why I only go to them when I have no other option, do I sound bitter, damn right.

Shouting removed.

We've had 21 new cars from a variety of marques (Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, Nissan, and Toyota), kept each one for between 3 and 4.5 years, all serviced by main dealers and never had anything like this scenario.

Ditto for us too Mike but then, I've always driven a hard bargain (never accepting the first offer) with the main dealers for a 4 year service package (including 1st MOT) to be included with every brand new Toyota I have ever purchased and have never been disappointed by the cost arrived at; which has always been excellent value and much cheaper than if I had paid for each one ad-hoc. Same experience in Scotland as down in England. In fact, I've yet to experience a "bad" Toyota Main Dealer! Ian's tale reminds me of an old proverb "you get more with honey than you do with vinegar...". Or, to put it another way, if you allow them to intimidate you and react accordingly, you will never get a good deal. If you make the first approach and dangle the carrot to them of buying into a long-term arrangement, it can be quite surprising how accommodating they can eventually get but confidence and assertiveness in the negotiation are the keys...

I've never bought new, too much depreciation, plus I'm retired(redundant) can't afford new, I'm not frightened of getting the spanners out, if it needed a clutch, cylinder head gasket etc I would doing it, but I'll give Toyota their due if they replace brake shoes, as well as the shoes they normally use a brake kit what comes complete with all new springs(not always needed) but generally, main dealer maintained cars are worth paying that bit extra for, but you will always pay top dollar from a Toyota dealer. A friend of mine bought a brand new car but it was discounted being the earlier model but none the less brand new, it was serviced by them each year and after 3yrs and 20k miles went back to main dealer for its MOT and possible trade in and was offered £3000 but they did point out that when he bought it new, they had reduced it, he didn't trade it in.

3k after only 3 years that is disgusting unless it was a base aygo

for instance the toyota dealer near me has a few 2015 icon yaris in stock for £9500 with 11k miles, they prob gave £8000 trade in and on a 15k car that is about what you would expect after 3 years even if the car is discounted when purchased

we also don't know how long ago this was

mass market cars typically depreciate by something like 60-70% over the first 3 years (depending upon condition/mileage), often 40% in the first year alone. I will give you an extreme example though -  back in 2008 as the Vauxhall Vectra was right at end of life a Vx dealer offered me an Elite estate at 56% off list, brand new!

yes that is vaxuhall not toyota or honda , all on your list were low grade types too, and that electric zoe was a complete nightmare, all the electric cars seem to depreciate faster than any petrol car no wonder they all get leased

What the OP hasn't said is what make and model the car above was - some marques and models do depreciate more than others, depending partly on what demand there is on the used market for them. We also don't know how long ago this was.

Thinking the model may have been a Toyota is just an assumption.

Even though a car may have a full dealer service history, used values are also dependent on condition.

https://www.express.co.uk/life-style/cars/762264/Toyota-depreciation-car-cost-price-used-car-second-hand ... Although if they are comparing residual value against list price I have to say that I am  a bit suspicious of their figures as you can get a far higher discount off a Ford or Vauxhall to start with than a Honda or Toyota ... On the other hand if they are comparing residual value against the much more highly discounted initial price paid it may be true.

Toyota also ran a swop your car for a £1, about 4yrs ago I think, a neighbour I know had the model yaris before the last, he jumped at it , he obviously had to pay the difference the, the £1 was sort of a deposit to generate car sales, he had only done 15k so he gave his daughter his old one, as it was too good to trade in. Yes you guessed it it was a vauxhall astra, top of the range what took the big hit on trade in, he's still got it and its done 35k with life time warranty, I've told him to keep it and punish them rather than take it on the chin.

I think that he will find that Vx will try to weasel on that should he need to claim on it - e.g. it is their idea of lifetime (100,000 miles) not yours.

It's also only applicable to the first registered owner, requires an annual check from a VX approved repairer etc. etc.. http://www.vauxhall.co.uk/owners_services/warranty_assistance/warranty/lifetime_warranty_terms.html
