Toyota Yaris 2004 Alternator

Hello, I have a quick question. My Toyota Yaris 2004 1.0 VVT-i 48kW (facelift) alternator broke down and I need a replacement. Found one but it says 1999-2003 1.0 alternator in description. So maybe someone knows if this 1999-2003 alternator can fit my facelift model? Thank you.

I can't answer that directly but after taking a quick look, the 1.0 litre Yaris all share the same 1SZ-FE engine so the alternator should physically fit.  Electrically it seems a bit more difficult since I saw listings for 70, 80, and 90 Amp models. Your existing alternator will have a plate on it with its rating (which may be in the format 50/120A/13.5V which refers to idle current/max current/voltage), you would need to compare the labels.

I don't know where you're located but alternators can often be rebuilt/refurbished - replace bearings, diode pack/regulator etc.

Good luck.

@Seeker Thank you for your reply, I will try to check my alternator's information later on.
What happened to alternator is that the casing cracked, the shaft that spins inside is not centered anymore, some weird metal/metal grinding sounds are coming out of it. As mechanic told me I can still keep using it until it's working but I need to start looking for a replacement. Maybe you know if that kind of the problem can be fixed?

No, that would not be economically repairable.  If the armature (the central shaft) is not centred, there is a risk that it will grind into the field windings which would kill the alternator quickly and the car would only run until the Battery discharged (but there should be a red warning light on the dash if/when that happens).

Personally, I would not use it if there are grinding noises coming out of the alternator, unless it was an emergency.  Is it is possible to align the cracked case so the shaft can rotate without making a noise and then put a strap of some kind around it to hold it in place as a temporary measure (maybe a large jubilee clip/hose clamp)?

@Seeker I tried checking the numbers on the alternator but they are hidden under, I probably need some kind of mirror or something. Also I need a better weather for this task, currently it is -20 degrees Celsius out here where I live.
Those grinding noises actually disappeared, only annoying hum sound comes up. It gets louder as engine runs on higher revs. There are no warning light on the dash, everything seems to work for now, just that sound...
Money is not really a problem for me, I could take my car to a service and get it fixed but I really want to do it myself. I always was interested in cars but a little bit scared to make them even worse by fixing them by myself. I really find it interesting searching for a part and trying to get as much help as I need for this issue. The only problem is the replacement part itself. As you said there are some alternator options with different AMP. Not really sure which one I need yet until I find the way to get the numbers on my current one. So finding a right replacement is the biggest difficulty for me, kinda scared to buy parts that won't be capable with my car. But I guess it is just a part of the process. Maybe there is anything else I can do to make sure that I'm buying the right replacement part? Thanks for all the provided information so far, it is really valuable to me.

If It was -20°C, I would lose interest too, in fact I lose interest when it's lower than +10°C.  Incidentally, if you find an alternator with a slightly higher rating that would work fine, I wouldn't go lower though.  So, if your existing alternator is 70A then an 80A would be ok but I wouldn't go to a 60A.  Car manufacturers calculate the maximum amount of electrical load that the car uses and factor in a small margin (maybe 10%).

I took a look at the alternators available on eBay and most of them show a Denso plate (the manufacturer), here's a picture of the 70Amp model.  I didn't think to ask if your car is left hand drive there is a (very slight) chance there may be a physical difference.

@Seeker Very nice information, I wanted to ask is it a big deal that AMP will not match. But now it's all clear. Thanks.

I am from Lithuania, we drive on the right side of the road. All this information you gave me really narrows everything. A friend recommended me this website of user car pats but I really don't like the fact that only description of the item is the title itself. Maybe your trained eye can take a look at the choices? I will drop a link here. http://xdalys.lt/

You can change the language. I already looked several times. I found this option http://xdalys.lt/en/4584245. Maybe you can take a look yourself I might be missing something important. Or maybe there are even better options? I really appreciate for all the help you are providing me. That is truly amazing. Thanks.

According to the Denso part number 27060-0J040 that is a 90A alternator which is fitted to some 1.0 litre and 1.3 litre Yaris, I don't think that one fits your car.  I looked in the Denso catalog

http://www.denso-am.co.uk/media/958639/desa170001mm-lr.pdf

1.0 16V Petrol 48 1SZ-FE 03/03-09/05 - AC DAN962 14 70 (a 70A alternator) but it looks like it also depends on whether you have a/c and power steering.

One German site also mentions that you need to check whether the electrical connections are on the back or on the side of the alternator.  You would also need to check that the pulley is the same size (but you could always swap your existing pulley over).

As far as I can tell the DAN962 is the same as the 27060-23010, you might want to take a look at this to see if it's the correct Yaris model:

@Seeker Truly amazing info, thank you very much. As I know all facelift(03-05) models had power steering as standart. Also my car doesn't have A/C.

I will have to check the connections, probably best would be to check the alternator number on the back of it. Just need to look there somehow. Will try to do that on the weekend.

Another question I wanted to ask is should I consider buying used one or a new one? I'm kinda worried that the used one could break down in couple of years. What's you opinion or that?

I also looked at the Yaris model you picked but I think it's not that. My car is left-hand drive and also 3-door model. But I only could find 3-door model with right-hand drive. What are those JPP and FRP models mean near Yaris?

Will start looking for a 23010 model maybe I can find something. Just wanted to thank you for research and all the info. Thank you.

I must admit that the more you try and determine the correct model alternator, the more conflicting information you find.

Anyway, if buying new is available to you, I would do that because:

1) The dealer will tell you which alternator you need (but I would take the old alternator with me - assuming you are going to a store)

2) It will come with a warranty

I do not know what JPP or FRP mean.  There is a plate fastened to the passenger door frame of your car which has the VIN (on UK cars) and it also has the Yaris model number, maybe that will help.

The 0J030 is a 70A alternator,

The 0J010 is also 70A and I think is a DAN960

The 27060-23040 is also 70A and I think is a DAN962.

This ebay advert may help (scroll down):

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-OE-Denso-DAN962-Alternator-TOYOTA-YARIS-1-0-27060-23040/122992856730?epid=1248315895&hash=item1ca2f20e9a:g:DzYAAOSw7a5alrUj

because it says that the 0J010/0J030/23040 are all equivalent, which implies any of the alternator numbers you listed would be suitable for your car.

@Seeker Great news! I finally managed to get the code of my alternator(putting my phone into the engine and taking an image).

Sorry for poor quality, it was hell to take this image. It is visible that the model is 0J040 (12V 90A). So basically I do know exact model now. It the same I posted few posts ago. I can't decide if I should buy that from user car parts shop(that one looks really dirty) or brand new one. The difference between prices are almost twice. I can get that used one for 70+ Euro and the brand new one costs about 140 euro. Its the same Denso one. I noticed there are many more alternators manufacturers, some of the them go for around 100Euro. Is there a lot of difference? Maybe you have an advice for choosing a manufacturer? I only heard about Bosch and Denso. Maybe there is something else I should take a look at?
I currently found a Bosch brand new one OE number: 0J040/0J020 with 90A. It costs 133euro. You think it's good deal? Considering user one with that poor condition cost 76euros.

Thank you.

Modern alternators tend to be reliable, so I'd look for a good price/good warranty.  The Bosch 0J040 sounds just fine.
