T25 2.0 or 2.4 Aut gearbox

Hi All,

I want to buy a T25 automatic,because i testdrived a T25 Aut a few months back and it felt good. =)

But,there are a few issues on buying a t25.

So i have heard that you should avoid the 1.6 and 1.8 because of a fuel consumption? This is no problem for me because i wanted a engine with enough power to make fun of bmw and vw drivers =) So i think i go for the 2.0 or 2.4.

The other thing i hear is a bad automatic gearbox? (now i'm starting to get nervous)

I cant seem to find any news about faulty gearboxes,so i hope you guys could help me out.

Maybe some things i need to pay special attention when im gonna buy the Car.

Thanks Guys:biggrin:

The 1.8 VVTi pre-facelift could develop a problem with oil consumption but you should be fine with a facelift 1.8 . Petrol consumption wise they are fine (obviously not as good as a diesel though). The 2.0 should be fine but a bit thirstier than the 1.8 & of course the 2.4 is thirstier again ... The 2.4 is very rare in the UK, don't know about where you live.

The torque converter autos tend to be very reliable.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for explaining.

I live in Utrecht Holland.

In Holland the word goes that some automatic gearboxes are not that reliable then you would suspect.

Dont know if this true or not. My brother in law tells me i should by a newer model with a CVT Automatic gearbox.

For me,its simple,i want a T25 Stationwagon (or saloon in England=) If it has to be a normal gearbox fine, but my first intention is a Automatic.

I owned a 2005 1.8vvti petrol manual which had reasonable performance for a fairly large car, and returned about 50mpg if driven nicely.  Later I owned a 2005 1.8vvti auto, which was lively enough at low speeds but flat at motorway speeds unless you changed down gears.  It returned about 34-36mpg no matter how it was driven.  You wouldn't make fun of BMW drivers in either of them.  I haven't driven a 2.0 petrol version but it doesn't have many more horses under the bonnet, and from reading reviews there's not much performance difference between the two engines.

However the T27 model (2009 on) is a different car altogether.  I owned a 2012 1.8 valvematic auto for a while too, and it has bags more punch than either of the T25's and still gave about 45mpg if driven nicely.  The CVT auto seems pretty bulletproof and is a great drive around town, but the engine gets 'revvy' at motorway speeds, especially on hills.  It's the best of the bunch for 'wolf in sheep's clothing' if that's what you're looking for.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for your reply and explinations.

Then maybe i should think about the 1.8 vvti.

Its a nice time to say i'm getting old and i don't need to drive that fast.(Especially with all the radars and police patroling =)

Before i had reasons to buy a Japanes i owned a Fiat Marea Weekend 2.0 5 cil.

That thing was really a wolf in sheeps clothing ad i loved the way it handles. However, chainging the timing belt of this car was over €1000 euro's,so i had to say bye bye.

Now he most important thing for me is reliabillity.

I keep you guys updated in what car i have bought.

Thanks for all your efforts everyone.

PS Are there any club forum stickers for my future car for sell somewhere?

I have tested both the 1.8 and the 2.0 (I own a 2.0 aut.) and I gotta say, the 2.0 feels more like the "correct" engine for the car, performance-wise. The fuel consumption, however, is absurd if you're going to do a lot of city driving. When driving in the city, it's about 13l/100km or more. On the highway, however, I'm able to get it down to 7l/100km.

The 2.4 is almost the same engine as the 2.0, just a bit thirstier and with some extra power. The biggest difference is the gearbox; the 2.0 has 4 gears, while the 2.4 has 5 gears.

When it comes to the automatic gearboxes, it all comes down to how the previous owner has treated the car. Check the ATF dipstick and make sure the fluid isn't black or smells burnt, or has any metallic particles in it. Other than that, take the car for a drive and look for any hesitation when changing gears or taking off, listen to see if you hear any noise related to the gearbox.
