Avensis D4D 2ADFTV Cold Starting

Hi,

this is my first post so hopefully this will work.

Has anyone had the following issue where you let your heater plug light go out, you crank it, and instead of starting it doesn't. My 2006 avensis has always started after four turns, whether it's summer or winter, and now it starts eventually.

I have attached a link to my video on YouTube so you can see exactly what's happening.

hopefully someone out there has an idea what is wrong.

Thanks

Matt

Hi Ian,

thanks for refering me to the other link.

what are your thoughts on my cold starting problem?

i changed the alternator and Battery last year, I have never changed the heater plugs or starter motor yet.

Hi Matt,

My Avensis has nearly 225k miles behind it and the heaters are still ok. I tested them by taking them out and checking their resistance. They were all around 4 ohms if I remember correctly. I've never changed starter, and in your position my next move would be to pour hot water on the SCV on a cold morning and see if it improves starting. In fact I'd do the hot water test first because it's easiest [emoji3]
I can also tell from your video that you're giving the heaters multiple hits, this will reduce their life, but I'd also expect that if any had failed the car would start on the other cylinders and if they had all failed the car would be very difficult to start whether heaters had been used or not.
Hope this helps, Ian

Hi Matt,

What's the history of the car, has it been services recently? When was the last fuel filter change? Ian

Cheers Ian, will definitely try that.

225k? That's impressive. You must have a good maintenance schedule. What's the secret to getting to that mileage?

I service mine every 10,000 miles or every year, usually about every 9 months. I change the fuel filter every other service, it is due to be changed soon.

Hi Matt,

I don't think I have a magic formula, the Toyota diesels are very hardy provided you don't have one of the few that burns oil. I service about every 8k, and even though the car is now worth less than my watch I still make sure I fix any issues that do arise. This forum has been a major source of information and inspiration for me. My motivation is that I don't want to replace the car because the roads in the UK are no longer of a good standard, and parking is a gamble with the miniscule parking spaces available. This way, if I get my for dinged or scratched I can shrug it off much easier. I'd like to get to 300k but a head gasket failure would be the end, though I'd consider a clutch replacement which it hasn't had to date. Ian

Worth less than your watch

You should definitely try for 300k, you've come this far.

do you have a picture of yours you could post?

Matt

I don't have any to hand Matt, but it's just a regular T2 estate. Ian

Update on the replacement SCV and ECU flash:

The flash definitely helped make the car run cleaner, but the combination with the "long!" modified SCV is a winner, the engine runs quieter and whereas before there was no point increasing the engine speed above 3000 RPM, now it goes past 4000 to the red. The 1AD is definitely no racecar, but I recommend the update to anyone who wants a more driveable engine, less smoke (new MOT regulations?) and/or quieter running, or who has cold starting issues. MPG is slightly decreased with the flash at somewhere between 5 and 10%. Ian

That's good news that your engine is unleashed.

how much is the update?

Hi Matt,

As it's a 1ad is never going to break the land speed record, but at least there is life above 3k now. I think in my case it was £114, but basically it depends on what your dealer thinks they can get away with. Mine charged me an hour's labour. It was worth every penny though.

Regards

Ian
