Any ideas for a budget software that shows ABS faults as well as all the usual engine parameters?

it's not just the software though, you need certain capabilities in the hardware too.

You can get a daily activation for techstream for €5 ex. VAT  https://www.toyota-tech.eu/GTS/Wizard/step2-intro.aspx

You can try a cheaper cable from eBay for techstream and it was not able to read the generic obd but mine did not work. I also found the car code bit a little confusing to say the least though I got pcmscan to connect which does not give all parameters but it does give the o2 sensor readings with a graph.

Best route I would say and cheapest is bluetooth obd connected to Android and you get real time data and check for abs codes, and you can leave the obd connected 24 7.

Though techstream is expensive because you need a special cable. My last car a Ford Focus 1999 had a free software forscan and was able to see all the information and did not need a special cable.

What about the jumper method where you connect pins 4 and 13 on the OBD socket, and the ABS and SRS lights will flash morse code style. I used to use this on my previous Avensis, but now use my Launch diagnostics reader which can look at everything on my current car.

Here is a link to the TOyota self diagnostics (obd jumper/paperclip method) which will show the fault code - http://www.testroete.com/car/Toyota/mr2 spyder/References/Technical Training/05 - Brake Systems/20.pdf

Some cheap diagnostic readers only read EML codes and nothing else. So long as you get one that can read ABS/SRS/VCS, then it should be fine for most cars.

Thanks for the comments and ideas. I may end up using techstream. The problem with that as well as the paper clip diagnosing is that the problem is intermittent and can go days ok and then ABS on for 1/4 hour. My plan was to drive around with the diagnostic running on the lappie and then as soon as it showed ABS light look at the fault code showing.

Think I might get this

It looks very comprehensive-if it works but get decent e bay feedback.

I could not install the techstream drivers on windows 10 even when I uninstalled the anti virus, but did so on 8.1. Though the car code has to be entered, not clear which is the code before it starts.
