One d4d is snappy, one is laggy

Hi Everyone

Would love a bit of help here. I am looking at 2 Avensis D4D's 2010 - both with 90,000 on them. One of them (a T2 ) has a great snappy engine, she has plenty of oomph. The other (a TR ) does not have the same 'oomph'. Sorry I know this isn't very scientific. I asked the guy selling why does the 2nd car feel a little less lively and I was told that this can happen, it depends on the way the car was driven by it's owners and that over the next few weeks the engine will open up and become more lively. He basically said if I buy the car and drive it, it will loosen up and be just as lively as the other. The TR has just been MOT'd for a full year. Or am I missing something that is different about a T2 and a TR?

Seller is genuine, for defs, so is he just mistaken or can an engine liven up a bit after a few weeks?  Any help would be great! Thanks.

I had an 01 d4d avensis, was a dead oul motor, no matter how hard I drove it. I just put up with it. I drove other people's cars the same as it and they were hell of a lot quicker, I think I wud be buying the T2.

Hi Gary, welcome to TOC

Which engines (2.0 or 2.2 D4Ds) & presumably both with the same transmission?

I don't know that I would believe him that the car will just become as lively but it may be something relatively simple like a sooted up EGR & manifold.

Obviously at 90,000 miles a lot of the useful life of clutch/DMF, injectors etc. has been used (unless already replaced).

The cars probably don't have DPFs & as such will be Euro IV or V at best.

Hi guys, thanks for answers.

Scott - they're both 2.0, 6 speeds. I've mentioned the EGR but I'll do it again tomorrow - today we drove both of them and the dealer even said the slight difference is something simple he thinks and to call back tomorrow afternoon - think I'll ring him in the morning and tell him to have the mechanic look at the EGR and manifold like you said. Scott, just one more thing if you don't mind - the differences between T2 and a TR - both engines should be 93w, but is anything else in the body different or is it just a spec thing? Forgive me for what you may think is a very dumb question, I just ain't a car guy...

Ant - I'm tempted to do that Ant, but the TR is better inside and out - less scrapes outside, better shape inside, although looks wise the T2 I think looks better! I just think it'd be a pity to miss the TR.

Thanks again Ant & Scott

It should be just a feature spec. thing. T2 is base, TR was next level above T2.

T2>TR>T4>T Spirit

The TR will be more desirable (now and if/when you sell it).  It has more kit ie front fogs, dual climate control, centre arm rest, auto wipers etc.

Well sure see what the dealer can do about the TR, hopefully it's something simple. Good luck in making ur decision.

Definitely worth a finger around the exhaust check as for DPF evidence. 2010 was a transitional year.

Personally I would avoid a DPF full stop if you can manage it. No doubt you will know their potential issues. To cap it off the early Toyota DPF systems were far from robust, a point clearly made due to the fact that Toyota deliberately excluded them from the warranty.

Sooted EGR/manifold is the obvious starting point but there many other more expensive reasons for the lack of power too.

Just checked the DPF consideration on the 2 litre diesel. Toyota started to fit a DPF back in 2009.

I would check the exhaust for soot.
