2008 2.0 d4d toyota avensis auto not shifting to gear 5

hello guys!

I need help,i have 2008  automatic toyota avensis with a d4d engine.its been giving me stress,its not shifting to gear 5,all other gears engage  smoothly.what could be wrong?

Could you supply a bit more info.

how many gears does it have? Is it skipping from 4th to 6th?

i'm assuming you're in Drive when it won't go into 5th, can you use the tiptronic to select 5th?

what is the outside temperature where you live? That can have a bearing on whether  the gearbox will use 5th or not, if 5th is the top gear.

Has your gearbox had its filter replaced, and the oil of course?

I previously owned a 2005 T25 Avensis 1.8vvti auto, and although the car seemed to have 5 gears, I reckon 5th was actually some sort of torque lock up feature.  When accelerating normally the gears would progress in turn until approx 52mph when it would engage 5th.  However, when accelerating briskly (but not foot on the floor briskly) it would change up from 3rd to 5th at the same 52mph.  Similarly, if you wanted a bit more power (but not full kickdown) from, say, 60mph - it would jump straight from 5th to 3rd.  IIRC it did the same when using the manual selector, ie it was impossible to select 4th above 52mph - you either got 5th or 3rd.

As a side note I also owned a couple of Peugeot autos a while ago which did the same.

its a 5 speed engine.tiptronic ends with gear 4 only....outside temperature is between 20-32 deg celcious
