Not Going into First or Reverse at Standstill

Hi,

My 2007 2.2 D4D Avensis will not go into reverse or first at standstill. I can push will all my might, and the gear will not go in. Once on the move, it's fine. But sometimes, at traffic lights, it will happen again. 

It doesn't always do it, sometimes first gear is silky smooth, and it seems to be fine when the engine is off.

Pumping the clutch makes no difference, there is no slipping, and I have to move off in second.

I had the gearbox replaced under the Toyota warranty about 18 months ago, the clutch was also done at the same time. However, dual mass fly wheel was not replaced, as it was judged to be fine. Could it be the dual mass flywheel?

It could be the DMF, does sound like for whatever reason the clutch isn't disengaging, causing the baulking you described. I'd be taking it back to whoever did the work on it earlier.

Died the clutch feel spongy or firm?

Clutch feels fine. It always has. Toyota only replaced it (free of charge) because it had oil on from the repaired gear box, and they were worried about it slipping.

The only 'unusual' feel is that first, reverse, and to some extent second are very clunky and notchy.

I was just wondering if the clutch could do with bleeding. Have you tried double pumping the clutch before trying the gears?

I get this sometimes when New Yaris wakes up from start-stop. I can't even force it into First gear and declutching, neutral, and trying again also doesn't work. However, I find I can put it into third and then it'll let me put it in first!

I've read scattered accounts that switching from a multigrade gearbox oil to a single-grade one can help, or vice versa. Haven't tried it myself yet as the start-stop system in mine very rarely works so the problem doesn't come up much.

Maybe because it is new and needs some time to set in. You can try to push the clutch and let it spring up this may help to release air out. The only other thing I can think of is to dip some wire into the gear box to check the gearbox oil level, just in case it may need topping up, or the garage may have gone cheap with the gearbox oil and it is having trouble with cold starts.
