It's apparently not a plug-in hybrid, so all the energy comes from burning petrol.  Not impressed.

If it performs as well as the old diesel RAV4s you should be at least a bit impressed! We'll see how it does!

You're right tho', they misted a trick in not making it plugin - The RAV4 is so godawfully gigantic now they could have stuck in the bigger Battery and charging gear without anyone noticing! XD

(I saw an original RAV4 parked next to a new one in the carpark yesterday and it made me giggle; Man that thing's put on weight over the years! Now I know where all of Kingo's pies have been going!! XD)

Compared to competitors it is around mid range in size:

New Rav 4 - length 4600mm; width 1855

Outlander - length 4695; width 1800

X-Trail - length 4640; width 1820

Tiguan - length 4486; 1839

Koleos - length 4672; width 1843

Peugeot 5008 - length 4641; width 1844

Oh I know, it wasn't a criticism, just an observation - All cars have been getting fatter as time has gone on. It was more seeing the difference in size side by side between the current RAV4 and the original one that made me laugh!

According to Parkers it's now a metre longer and half a foot wider and a fair bit taller - the original was 3708mm long and 1676mm wide; That's *smaller* than New Yaris!! XD XD XD

I think it's a fairly common occurrence.  The model name stays the same, but the vehicle gets bigger each iteration, until the manufacturer realises his small car isn't any more, and he has to introduce a new model in that slot to restore the range.

Biggest market for the RAV4 is the US where, despite Camry sales being up 12%, it replaced the Camry as Toyota's best selling vehicle in the last quarter. With the current prices of "gas" & electricity in the US not being a PHEV won't be a problem there. We very much come down the pecking order for what we want from/on a RAV.

If that is so, why is there a Prius PHEV?

Prius & RAV4 are not aiming for the same market profile, Prius obviously aims at the committed environmentalist who is less likely to be driving a larger, heavier & 4wd SUV. Look at the numbers of Prius, 65,000 (let alone Prius Prime, 20,000) sold in  the USA in 2017 compared to RAV4, 408,000. & RAV4 is growing sales there whereas Prius declined.

Remember that is a market where the biggest selling vehicles are all light trucks but are often owned by families.

Afaik the Prius is the only Toyota PHEV available in either the US or UK (possibly worldwide?).

I find it better looking than current RAV4. Good that they didn't adopt stupid gaping jaw like in Lexus!

Would have liked slightly less width. I always find width more of a problem than length.

Not sure why Toyota is offering any turbo petrol like its competitors. Still, 2.0 petrol + AWD is good combination. I see engine offerings are not changing compared to current RAV4 except dropping of diesel.

Agree with comments about increasing size of RAV4. If you want original RAV4 size car then Suzuki Vitara is better bet.

In 2019 I have decide between new RAV4 and Kia Sportage.

Shame they did not implement Android Auto, just the Apple Car play.

I'm surprised they added Apple Car Play, considering their Motorsport sponsorship by Microsoft :ermm:

That is for the American Entune 3 system. American & European Toyota infotainment systems are different so I would guess that it is unlikely that we shall see Entune 3 here.

However, Toyota supposedly are signed up to something where a single app will in the future allow use of either Android Auto or Carplay - not due for ~ 1 year iirc.

you may find this interesting:

Will there be a plug-in hybrid version?

"We are not currently working on a plug-in for the RAV4 because we need to consider the power, performance and pricing of such a car and how it fits into this class. I don’t think that balance has yet been made. But the technology is easy to convert, so when the conditions are right we can consider it quite easily."

RAV4 also one of Autocar's Stars of the Show!
