How can I play my Android phone's audio directly into my Yaris's basic audio system?

I have a 2008 Toyota Yaris. I live in Canada and bought the car in Canada. The audio system looks like this

It comes with a CD slot, FM and AM. But it can't play the stuff from my Android smartphone. What are the options to make use of the car's Speakers? Prefer an inexpensive solution. I understand I can buy an FM transmitter. But perhaps it would be better if there was some way to connect the smartphone to the audio system by a line. Is there something at the back of the audio system that lets me connect it directly? I think the audio would be much better than by FM transmitter.

Thanks.

FM transmitter would be better than a wire in this situation IMO. I seriously doubt you'll notice any degradation in quality compared to a cable and you won't have a wire dangling around.

You could possibly add a bluetooth solution which potentially would also allow you to make hands free calls.

or possibly consider changing the original head unit for a new 3rd party one - tech has moved on a long way in 10 years.
