Timing belt failure

Greetings fellow Toyota vehicle owners, my name is Basil Jacobs and l own a TOYOTA AVENSIS 2.2 Diesel engine. My timing belt bearing failed and my mechanic is saying that l the vehicle could have damaged the valves. Is there anyone who has  had this experience before?

Hi,

Sure other Avensis owners will confirm but to be sure you need your engine model number and cross reference it against a list like this which shows if its an Interference or not.

If it is,   bent valves likely or even piston damage if it ran badly .

Was the fault just a bad bearing noise or did the belt jump some teeth or come off ?

I wonder if the OP meant timing chain? I thought that 2.2 diesel engines only had timing chain, and it would be an interference engine anyway. 

Regular oil changes are needed to protect the timing chain.
