Hello there,

I just bought my car 5 days ago. It broke down yesterday with the Battery and drain water lights on. The garage said that the alternator needs to be changed as well as the filter. My question is should I accept the repair from the seller or should I get a refund and find another car. It is a 2006 t spirit with 66.000miles and full service book(shocking considering what happened). I am not very experienced in cars so was wondering if these problems mean that there are more to come:/ very very disappointed and feel unsafe now.

It may have a full service history but when was it last serviced? If you''re otherwise happy with the car, accept the repairs. If not walk away.

Presumably as you only bought the car five days ago, the dealer is covering the cost of repairs. If not, see https://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/regulation/consumer-rights-act. - especially the section 'the first six months'

One has to bear in mind that a 12 year old car may require more repairs as components age, wear, etc.

Well,  last service was by toyota last September at 64.000 so the car did 2.000 miles since then. They will pay yes, I ve just lost faith in the car now but feels so difficult to start searching again for another car. However I might have to:/

Stick with it.!..and simply have the repairs done with no expense to you.

These things can happen and it certainly doesn't mean you have a bad car...components wear out and need replacing on ALL cars., even those with good service history...so it isn't "shocking" at all tbh.

The Yaris is a really good car...generally very reliable and inexpensive to run and you shouldn't "lose faith" so quickly.

Look after it and it will reward you..

My personal thoughts....

A fully service doesn't means things or repairs has been carried out. It's just a stamp in the book. Always check for invoice and check MOT history on gov website to see what the state of the car is like.

last MOT was end of March and generally always passed MoTs with no serious problems. Either is something weird or just me unlucky. To be honest there were no invoices maybe I should check with toyota about previous services. (?)

If you register with "My Toyota" you can check any dealer service history online, if it was serviced "outside" of the Toyota dealer network it will not show up.

This is one of the reasons you have a warranty, if something goes wrong it gets fixed. Things sometimes go wrong on new cars, let alone a car that is 12 years old. If the garage is not putting up a fuss and doing the repairs, then I would let them get on with it. It is not nice for it to happen with your new car, but these things do happen

Alternators don't last forever, I had one replaced on a Nissan at the 10 year/100k miles point. At least you know a the new one should last you for at least 66k miles.
