paint underneath car

Hi would you expect a brand new car (yaris) to have patchy sprays of paint under the arches when it has been sprayed at the factory?

Moved to the Yaris club. Pictures may help.

Hi I am sure I read somewhere on this forum someone with the same issue? It looks as if when the car has been sprayed some blue  is showing in the wheel arch  but you do have to get down to see it, maybe this happens.

It's a 2017 car (from your profile), but brand new?

Yes was purchased brand new  in June last year but is new in my eyes, just wanted to know if anyone had this same issue, just seems shoddy to me?

It is common nowadays for manufacturers, not just Toyota, to save both money and weight, by not sprayimg lacquer and topcoat on some areas which are usually not in view.

This practice was started by Mazda when they introduced the 2007 Mazda 2 and which was the subject to intensive weight saving compared to previous models.

For example it is common for engine bays, spare wheels wells, etc not to be given topcoats.

I would probably suggest that the wheelarches, if they don't have topcoat/lacquer applied, will still have stone guard paint applied, so will still be well protected.

As I said earlier, pictures may help.

This is my wifes rear o/s wheel arch.  It appears there is no underseal/chip protection applied to an are that is not susceptible to chips. I would suggest as long as there's no overspray there are no issues.  All 4 wheel arches are similar.

That picture shows perfectly the 'shelf' in front of the rear wheels which I believe is a future corrosion site due to the accumulation of muck it collects, forming a 'poultice'. Looks like the cameraman gives it a good clean, as do I on mine whenever I wash it.

Thank you to all, very helpful.

Would I have been better to have mud flaps?  always been told they are not worth having on?

Many thanks

Quite a few cars have similar areas in front of the rear wheels - not just the Yaris. Certainly a Mazda 2 we had springs to mind.

Mud flaps won't protect the area in the picture. Having said that as far as I'm aware front mud flaps help protect the sill area behind the front wheels, and, depending on the car, rear mud flaps help reduce the amount of road spray and dirt deposited on the rear tailgate/rear window in wet weather (they also help reduce spray and flying debris from the tyres for vehicles behind).

I have applied underseal that contains waxoyl on all the yaris' that we've owned especially in those areas as I believed they would cause me problems further down the line. Also looks a lot tidier, but I agree it looks like they're 'penny pinching'.

If you look at the older mk2 cars that are for sale chances are they've been 'jet' washed under the arches which exposes the rusty unprotected areas.

Thanks Steve, have to say my Yaris SR 57 plate wasn't like this so clearly they are penny pinching.

Was that the 1.8 SR or 1.3? If it was the 1.3 then chances are they were either undersealed by a previous owner or just 'mucky' which gave the same impression. The rarer 1.8's were built in Japan so could have been weather treated from new but I can't be sure as I never got too close to one to find out. We've owned 3 mk 2's over the years and 2 mk 1's. and from memory I think I also applied underseal to those as well.

Hi the car I purchased in October 2007 was a 1.3 SR and it was bought brand new from the dealer but that did not have what seemed to be paint overspray.

Open the hatch and check out the paintwork around the hinge area - no lacquer on my car there …..

As I said earlier, this is quite common across manufacturers. Our i20 doesn't have lacquer on the hinge area of the tailgate. In common with no topcoat in other areas, etc, shaves a small bit off the weight of the vehicle, which helps with fuel consumption and reduces cost.

I was just adding info regarding our cars (easier to notice here than in the wheel well area), in fact nearly the whole of the inner edges of my tailgate has a matt finish. I am not complaining, just acknowledging.

Whilst the steel used in these cars is pretty corrosion resistant, not having rear wheel arch liners on a non-budget supermini like the Yaris is poor. The welded nut edges on the mud trap area will start to corrode first. The silver suspension bolt will also be susceptible.

The same area on a first generation Aygo/C1/107 is almost identical, and this is what I did with my 107 when it was 11 months old:

1 Carefully hose out the wheel arches and then  gently wash using a sponge with car shampoo.

2 Leave the car to dry thoroughly (best not to drive it for a day).

3 Masking as required, spray on a few coats of Dinitrol Corroheat 4010 anti rust wax. This is clear, slightly yellowy, and when dry is not tacky. It can be wiped of whenever you want using white spirit / product remover, and if you did the surface underneath would be a

Doing this on all the vulnerable, unprotected weld seams and transactor components will keep them good as new, for life.

Best do do this when a car is new / nearly new.

The product can be used anywhere on the vehicle exterior, not just engine bays.
