Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System for quiet hybrids and electric vehicles

The Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System will be a simple speaker system that will be activated at low speeds on quiet hybrid and electric vehicles, and will enable the approach of such vehicles to be easily identified by those with visual impairments.

AVAS will be a mandatory fitment to all new models of quiet hybrid and electric vehicles by 1st July 2019, and will be a mandatory fitment on all new quiet hybrid and electric vehicles by 1st July 2021.

For example the 2019 Toyota Auris and Rav4 may have AVAS fitted from launch, as they are both new models introduced in 2019. However the current Toyota Prius may not need to have AVAS fitted until 2021.
