Reversing problem

My step daughter has an 07 D4D Auris, which has had a few issues....the cold start one notably!

Tonight she called and tells me that on a steep obstructed narrow hill she negotiates daily that when she tries to reverse uphill to allow oncoming traffic through, the car will not rev for around 30 seconds, and has completely failed to reverse on a couple of occasions. I see the hand of the control module in this.. but I am paranoid about computers in cars, has any one else experienced this or resolved the issue?
