Hi Toyota forum :)

Im buying a 2007 Corolla wagon 1.6 vvti tomorrow and want to know what i should look for?

It has run 170k km, automatic. Is the automatic transmission reliable?

The transmission may be Toyota's Multi Mode Transmission, which is an automated manual box rather than true automatic.

To follow on from Frosty’s advice - if the gear lever has the traditional PRND set up its a torque converter auto, but if it only has RNE (I think it’s E, it might be D) then it’s the MMT gearbox and the one we had in our 2011 1.6 Auris was by far the worst engine/gearbox combo I’ve ever driven.

Thanks guys.

Just checked this up as i have never heard of this MMT box. It has the normal PRND set up, so should be normal automatic? It only has 4 gear's tho...

It's not the dreadful MMT then.  If it's the same style of box as fitted to the Avensis of similar age then it's pretty bulletproof.  My 2005 one had 4 gears too but the box also 'locked up' at about 52mph giving the equivalent of a 5th gear.  However, above 52mph 4th gear is not available, therefore you either have a gutless feeling 5th gear, or a very high revving 3rd gear.
