Introduction + real-world economy figures 2010 1.4 D-4D

Hello everyone,

I've been snooping around the board for a while and thought I'd introduce myself and my car.

After driving French cars all my life (Renaults and Citroëns) I decided to buy something newer for my long (700km/430mi) motorway trips from where I live to my native country and back. After some looking and reading I decided on a used 2010 Auris 1.4 diesel, mostly because of its reputation as reliable. Not that my previous cars have let me down apart from once, but still 😉

It's a fancy model with leather upholstry, heating in the seats and even an auxiliary heater for those cold Scandinavian winters. Unfortunately although it's a 2nd gen Auris the radio has been replaced with a 1st gen Auris radio, so I don't have a radio with USB input. I might replace it at some point as burning CDs gets old really quickly.

Now, 5 months and 16000km/10000mi later I can say that I'm very pleased with the car - it's comfortable and relatively quiet, and it feels very solid and well-built (at least, compared to some of the other cars I owned!).

Fuel economy so far is okay, given the car's weight - over 16,333km/10157mi it's used 848litres /186.5 imp gallons, coming down to 19.2km/l or  5.2l/100km (54.5mpg). Dodging the ominous LOW FUEL sign a lot of times, the most I've gotten out of one filling was 979km/608mi, which isn't bad really. This is one area that's been a bit disappointing, although on some trips I get nearer to 4.8-4.9 l/100km.

Related to this it's very obvious that the engine's just a 1.4, compared to the larger turbodiesels I've drived - overtaking at motorway speeds in 6th gear is a no-no and there's generally a lot more shifting to keep the revs over 2000rpm if I want any "oomph" out of the car. Maybe at some point I'l get the ECU remapped to get a little bit more power out of the engine. But at cruise speed it runs like a dream 🙂

Anyway, thanks for sharing all your knowledge so far and looking forward to engage in the discussion!

Welcome to Toyota Owners Club.

With the 2020-2012 Auris (first generation facelift) the usb and aux sockets were inside the upper glove box - have you checked there?

Thanks Mike!

Yes, I have the glove box - the sockets have covers on them. Also the colour on the radio is off - it's a different colour than the rest of the dash, so that made me think the radio must've been replaced earlier with a mk1 version. So unfortunately they did a thorough job and also plugged the aux/USB sockets. If I get a genuine mk2 replacement radio I'll also have to get the sockets re-installed.

The pre facelift stereo (prior to February 2010) had a grey facia, whereas the post facelift (February 2010 onwards) had a black facia.

Yes, that's about it. The picture I just snapped clearly shows the difference between the radio (pre-facelift) and the rest of the fascia (post-facelift).

Hmm, i wonder if the mk1/2 radios are interchangeable. I got one of those bluetooth things where you can plug usb, memory card, or just use cable connected to your phone, and it works fine. I only got 2 cd's burned with MP3, but since you can fit 120+ songs on it, that's plenty of capacity for me.

The 2010-12 Auris was a mid-life facelift of the first generation. The second generation went on sale in the UK in December 2012.

Aside from the Toyota Touch system, which was introduced to Auris part way through the post-facelift's life, the head units were carried over from the pre-facelift to the post-facelift.
