I bought a used "Toyota Corolla 1.6 VVT-i Sol Business 4d MM-T" 2008 model that has 142 000 km in the meter. I have changed brake fluids and coolant fluids. This week i went it to Toyota to change the gearbox oils and i got the first view to the bottom of the car. There seems to be some rust in there. What do you think is it normal for 10 year old car, or is it too much and something should be done to it? Rust works are just so expensive (from 500eur), so is it necessary if i'm planning to keep the Corolla for about 5 years?

Normal rusting for 10 year old car or in need for immeadiate action? Recommended actions?

Most of that looks all pretty much just surface rust, if u cud rub down the worst with a wire brush and then paint with a rust treatment that cleans the rust off and a good lick of waxoyl, wud definitely be a big help. and repeat every year and u should be ok I think. U can cut that rotten joint out of the exhaust when it start's blowing out.and maybe weld in a we piece of pipe to join the two ends permanently, it's prob bout normal for a ten year old motor that amount of rust, but anything u can do to help keep the rust in check will benefit u in the long run.

Hi,

Wonder if different countries ( yours ?)  get different levels of underbody seal as yours looks like its got little protection.

The rear parts I would look carefully at its the metal brake pipe as pointed to in the pic below.

The last few inches are exposed and can corrode easily,  same with the flexible brake hoses, those metal ferrules can rust badly.

Same with the metal pipes from the fuel tank to filler cap,  they will need treating or replacing, a known problem area.

Changing the gearbox oil is quiet easy, wonder why you needed to get Mr.T to do it ?

Have you changed the engine oil and filter ?  air filter and  plugs ?  - always worth while if the recent service history is unknown.

Don't forget the pollen filter behind the glove box, can lead to poor air circulation /smells etc

Thank you for your answers. I live in Finland, so here we have all 4 seasons and much salt on roads in winter..

Yes all basics spark plugs, oils + filters are changed too. I took it to Toyota because it has sealed gearbox oils, and the fill plug is in very difficult place. They took only 80eur of it with Toyota oils so i think its reasonable (+ i got under the car). I did it because this has the multimode MM-T transmission, so i figured it would expand the lifetime of it. Don't like the mmt transmission much and afraid that it will be the first thing to broke in this thing.. Have you heard what is the lifetime of the mmt gearbox? Or the actuator, since this has a normal manual gearbox..

What is the middle hose coming from the tank? It seems to be pretty rusty.. Largest is the intake hose and the third is the fuel to the engine hose i think..

Hi,

Right, seems the auto boxes are a specialist job,   though most have manual boxes in the uk.

Think those pipes are breather/vent and possibly return from the engine ??

You might find replacements on eBay who show a lot for  earlier models.
