alarm sounding (NOT burglar alarm)

I can't find this in the manual.

Corolla Verso 2004 1.6VVTI

This morning (taking big girl to her first genuine exam) after we got 100m an alarm sounded.  beeeeeeeeeep non stop.  turn engine off, it stopped, turned on again and after another 30 seconds same thing.  (A kind neighbour rescued her).

My guess would be oil filter*, but I can't find any mention of an alarm in the manual.  No lights are on. 

Inspiration please?

* Because 20 years ago driving the in law's passat on the motorway a similar beep happened, they told me to ignore it and 5 miles later the engine siezed for ever.

Door open, seat belt not fastened?

My seat belt warning goes off quite often if I have things on the seat, a heavy shopping bag can be enough to do it.

thanks for the suggestions but nope.   In the end I called out a recovery service and when he arrived guess what, nothing! 

We've driven about 100 miles since and no problem at all.  aaaaaargh!!!
