Getting a plain key cut?

Sorry if this is an old topic, but has anybody got any experience of getting a cheapie transponder-less key cut? Will Timpsons do it, and if so do they need to see the V5?

We're off to France soon for a camping holiday, and the thought of losing the key in the wilds is a worry. With my last car, a VW Passat, I kept a plain key strapped away under the car in the knowledge that it wouldn't be enough to start the car (indeed, it would set the alarms off ), but it would at least get me through the driver's door so that I could recover the real second key. Which had been concealed in a cunningly obscure place, wrapped of course in aluminium foil to stop it from radiating the necessary codes back to the dashboard.

So, will Timps etc do this? Ta!
