Hello everyone. I have just bought a 2015 Auto x play. Should I drive the little 1 ltr engine as I did my previous 1.4 ltr engine as far as gears go or follow the gear change indicator? 38/39 mph seems too slow for 5th gear.

Any advice greatly appreciated

The gear shift indicator was introduced within the EU to help drivers drive more economically. So people use them, others don't.  They're only a guide. It is your choice.

Frankly I have been routinely ignoring that rinky dinky little light for the last  3 cars ... Nothing bad has happened in all that time.

I drove my sister's Yaris which had one of these on it, I thought there was a disco on the dashboard!

I own an Aygo 2 and in most cases, the gear shift indicator is neither relevant nor helpful. It will stupidly light up once the revs reach a certain amount. You can feel this device was added with no more motivation than complying with the law. Try to drive following its advice, you will end up driving too low on revs and being very rapidly in top gear.

Still, my impression is that the Aygo 2 does not like when you change gears too high on revs, unlike the Aygo 1. The Aygo 1 enjoys it, which makes it fun to drive. Changing gear high on revs makes gearchanges easier. But the Aygo 2 does not like it that much. I feel shocks in the flywheel/clutch/gearbox when I change gear too high on revs.

Yes - as with the majority of manufacturers, the fitting of a gear shift indicator is just to comply with legislation.

unlike zuh, i find my car car performs much better when the revs are kept high!

i also find she is much happier at motorway speeds than at 30mph

and that gear change light is useless, telling you to change up a gear when you are strugling up a hill, utter rubbish!

Particularly because under normal driving conditions i.e when you are looking out of the windscreen at where you are going you can't really see it. It s a completely different  to having instruments like a speedo that you can glance at momentarily to having something out of your sight line you basically need to watch all the time.

Rubbish. Impractical, ineffective, dangerous rubbish.

Yep. I am beginning to notice the same Dark Matter. I used to apparently drive like Miss Daisy, which caused my previous car all sorts of carbon issues and was told to drive it hard. When i drove it hard the MPG went right up so i intend to do the same with the Aygo and ignore the gear change symbol. In my opinion, and i'm no mechanic, 38MPH is way too slow for 5th gear. Maybe good for the planet but not good for my pocket.
