Cheapest way to get a spare remote key

I've just bought a used Verso (having had a Corolla Verso for the last 13 years). It came with only one remote key ( the dealer told me that this is all you get), but for convenience we need two. What is the best/cheapest way of getting another remote key? Can I buy the complete uncut unprogrammed key with electronics from somewhere? Have got one, what is the process for programming it into the car so it works? I don't mind a bit of DIY but the prices I have been quoted (up to £250) are outrageous. How do I tell what frequency my car/existing key use? There seem to be several options here.

Thanks - Rowan

There are various methods of programming keys on the internet, and these may or may not work.

Could try an auto locksmith, and buy a key including programming.

The whole point of making keys expensive, and this isn't just Toyota but for most manufacturers, is from a security viewpoint, and to discourage any Tom, Dick or Harriet being able to just buy keys for a vehicle.

Thanks for your reply. I realise that setting the price for these high may be a way of deterring dishonest users, but as the owner of the car I don't see why I should have to pay the price. I have looked inside my existing key and it only has two electronic components in it. You can buy things much more complex than this (e.g. a Raspberry Pi Zero W) for less than 10 pounds from China.

I was hoping someone would be able to tell me WHICH of the sources on the internet have a process which works with cars like mine, and WHICH internet supplier offers the correct blank keys.

Thanks - Rowan
