Dashboard lights

Recently bought a 2009 Toyota Auris 1.33 TR. During normal driving, the instrument panel dashboard is easily read with the panel lights bright. When you switch on the side or dipped beam lights, the instrument panel does dim down significantly to the point where it is nowhere near the brightness as before. I’m assuming this is normal but do feel that they could be brighter whilst the lights are on.

Any replies appreciated.

Probably they dim because lights are usually turned on when the natural light dims, as in night driving, dark clouds, tunnels etc. In those conditions the normal bright light would be a big distraction for the driver.

Moved to the Auris club.

One can adjust the brightness of the instrument lighting.

Turn the sidelights on. On the instrument cluster, press the right hand button until one sees a series of five bars and a bulb symbol. Holding the button increases/decreases the brightness of the lighting. Release when the desired brightness level is reached. Turn off sidelights.

On the same sort of theme , is there anyway to turn the brightness up on the radio of a 2015 facelift Auris active ?

Thanks a lot Frostyballs. I’ve just gone and did just as you said and all is good now. I can see it great now with the side lights on. It had been on the lowest setting.

Cheers for the swift reply. The Forum is brilliant for this type of help.

Regards

It's usually linked to the dashboard illumination level

Scott , i thought that as well as that was how my Mk1 auris worked . As sson as i switched the lights on it dims to the second photo . it is fine at night but if driving in  the day with dipped headlights on you can struggle to see the radio

That is it working as designed - when you switch your lights on the dash, & therefore the head unit screen, dim to whatever level (user adjustable) you have set for night.

I am not familiar with that head unit but you possibly may be able to over-ride that ( there may be auto, day & night settings as in this & my last Avensis) but then you can end up with a head unit screen that is distractingly bright at night.

Agree that it is working as designed but with it being flat screen it really suffers with glare . I have looked in all the settings and it appears there is no option to alter the radio face..
