Scratches on plastictrim around gearstick

My CVT Auris has a pretty big piece of black plastic around the gearstick. When I clean the car I ONLY use a damp soft cloth, never papertowels.

How ever, the crappy plastic is covered with fine scratches, can I polish the plastic in any way to remove them? The plastic must be extremly "soft", so it must be quite easy to ruin completly, if the wrong product is applyed.

Maybe better to use something to fill in the holes, like wax does on car exterior?
