Touch 2 and Go upgrade

My wife and I both drive Auris Hybrids; she has a 2017 touring sports; I have a 2015 Luna, both have the Touch 2 and Go, she has GPS navigation I do not,

My question is about the Media/ Radio system, The 2015 model seems very basic compared with the newer system, the Radio is not RDS and the station presets are different, Can I upgrade the firmware to bring mine up to spec? I did ask at my Toyota Dealer and was told no..the entire head unit would have to be replaced. This seems odd, the hardware seems identical (Apart from the GPS navigation) I am a retired IT professional and I can't see why updating what is basically an open-source Panasonic software package should be a problem

If you don't have navigation you don't have Touch 2 with Go - Go is the nav part (a separate hardware module that plugs into the back of the head unit).

Surely if the hardware was identical then yours would also have RDS (did you really mean this or did you mean DAB?) ...? The Touch 2 with Go versions got a significant firmware update iirc in 2016 which changed the UI of the system (see http://blog.toyota.co.uk/toyota-touch2-with-go-receives-major-software-upgrade)  - the media only version has never received an equivalent.

Thanks for the reply!

I did not know that the “Go” referred to the GPS satnav, which makes sense

I guess that means that Touch2 does not get updates, which makes no sense

Reading through the Forums it would seem that the Touch 2 software is quite buggy, Toyota should just go for Apple CarPlay or Android,

Toyota make great cars but  Apple and Google are much better at this type of technology

Agree with you Frank, but as it is I have my music tracks on a USB stick, just 1,016 of them (and growing), and just press the random play button.

Toyota don't make their ICE/Infotainment - Touch 2 afaik is oem'ed by Harman (now part of Samsung) who also supply Mercedes etc., the maps for with Go are supplied by Here. I can only speak from my own experience which has always been with a version of Touch/Touch2 with nav but I wouldn't say that Touch 2 is buggy, more that some people want it to work in a way or do things that it wasn't designed to do.

All car manufacturers struggle to keep up with the rate of change of the computer/mobile phone industry. Touch 2 at 4+ years in production (& therefore older in design) is ancient tech by those standards. I think that you will find that the new generation Auris & RAV have different systems incorporating CarPlay or/or Android Auto when they start arriving in showrooms.

Yes, Toyota don't make the radio/satnav themselves, but they are responsible for choosing what they commission from Harman.

From what I have read, the upcoming Toyota feature Apple Car Play, but not Android Auto. Toyota think that Android Auto slurp up too much data from the car.

The Aygo facelift's  X-touch system is available with Carplay and Android Auto.

OK the Aygo is manufactured by Toyota Peugeot Citroen Automobiles (TPCA) rather than being solely a Toyota product, and the X-touch is Pioneer.

You have to be aware of differentiation between the N. American & European markets as they use different infotainment systems. I think that so far the only infotainment systems that we have seen on the forthcoming new Auris/Corolla & RAV have been the Entune systems for the American market (where Apple is dominant, although my US friends tell me that they are losing market share even there).

Toyota were involved with a project working on an app. that would be installed on a head unit  & which would then handle connection to either but I haven't seen an update on that in a long time.
